Anybody within driving range should attend the following event at the Old Town School of Music:
"Sonny Jr. To Visit B1!!! Sonny Jr. spent time driving Sonny Terry around back in the day, and he's coming to B1 on February 25 to spend some time with us! In the afternoon Rhythm and Chording class he'll be talking about Sonny Terry and rhythmic playing and in the 8:00pm Level IV class the discussion will likely turn to amplifiers as he is a premier builder of harmonica amps. Come out and learn from this terrific guest!"
Many years ago, in the mid-1990s, I attended one of Sonny Jr.'s shows at Chicago Blues in NYC. There are many players who can do a pretty good version of Sonny Terry's style--including, I'd like to think, yours truly--but he's the only player I've ever heard who can replicate the lightning-fast stuff that Terry does on certain slow blues. I've never forgotten that concert.
He's a fine amped-up player, but that's not where he excels. If you attend this event, please ask him to play a slow blues in the Sonny Terry style, un-amped.
