I used my SM57 for 5 years or so and was happy with it. Recent year I've noticed that I dislike my tone. I thought it was because of using Line6 POD HD or old tube inside my HarpAttack, but suddenly I've compared my SM57 to another one and noticed that mine sounds less sensitive to attack, less high frequencies and more muddiness. I decided it because of dirt and cleaned it (grill, foam and very gentle cleaning for membrane). It goes a bit better but still not perfect. Today I've compared it with two new SM57 and they are perfect compared to mine. I've played gig with new SM57 and was happy even with Line6 tone. Of course it was dropped on the flour several times, I beatboxed into it, it gets sweat from my hands. Anyway is it possible to recover it or I need a new element?

Boris - if you've used it that much - I would simply replace the mic. The parts for it comes so close to the price of a complete mic it wouldn't make sense to do anything else - except, of course, spend a little more and get an Ultimate 57..... ;) ---------- /Greg

Out of curiosity, is this issue fixed on the ultimate 57 mics? Sounds like after a few years/hundred hours of use it weakens and needs replacement?

The Ultimate mics use standard Shure elements and transformers. So nothing about the Ultimate affects this "issue" -although I don't think there IS an issue. Shure mics are well known world wide as being about the most bullet proof, well -lasting mics available. Shure warranties the SM mics for 2 years (and I warranty Ultimate mics for 2 years.)
But something is evidently wrong with Boris' mic. I'm simply saying it is faster and cheaper to replace the whole mic than to try to repair it.
By the way, if you send it to Shure they will almost certainly replace it for free.
