OK, I've got a customized Astatic shell with a Shure 99A86 inside. I am however getting a lot of feedback from an otherwise great sounding mic. Could it be my cable which was scavanged from a mid seventies shure ball mic of some sort? What should I be running on this mic? Thanks!

Not likely to be an issue with the cable.
What amp are you using? How is it tubed? What are your settings? What mic shell?
Are you a newer player to amplified harp? Not trying to insult just trying to get enough info to help. A lot of feedback is positioning and poor cupping. The other angles that really contribute are gain of the amp and sometimes the amp just being out gunned live so it is turned up more than it can really handle
Some cms are stupidly hot. Not a bad thing I prefer a silly hot cm at the moment my number one mic is a 440sl with a crazy hot element.
Some mic shells have venting that doesn't help with feedback. And often times some non shure shells have poorly fitted or worse basically non existent gaskets.

Well I'm playing a Fender Bjr that has been re-tubed and performs well with my Shure brown bullet and a 99s556 element. Comparable setup and I would assume comparable performance but no... the 99A seems really hot. Much crisper tone and defined bass notes. Maybe the 99s is just gettin' old? I've had it for about 20 years.

Can't answer your question but maybe I can help anyway. I've had 99S556's that were VERY hot compared to 99A86's AND vice versa. On average - they're about the same.
Try swapping the elements between the shells. If the feedback stays with the shell, it could be that it is too leaky, or acoustically coupling due to improper gasketing.
What tubes did you go to in your BJ?

Hi Greg, It's tubed with Mullard EL84s, 12DW7 n #3, AU7 n #2 and AX7 in #1. Tubes made a massive change for the better. Next will do billm mods and see what happens.

You've already tubed down your amp. Good. If the resistor that came with your 99S556 is still there but disconnected, try reconnecting it. That may have a minor beneficial impact on feedback. So would adding a volume control - not just because it lets you lower the volume, but the resistance in either adds a bit of load to the element and will tame it just a touch. ---------- /Greg

Greg, I forgot to mention, I am using a Martin inline VTC as part of my rig.

Many of these elements had a resistor soldered across the back of the magnet/coil assembly between the terminals. It is obvious if it is there, but not all elements still have them. Especially because you're using an inline volume control you should clip that out of the circuit. ---------- /Greg

@Georgia Blues The resistor you want is a 39K carbon,.This is what Shure installed back in the day,..Try ebay ? Also Agree with Greg ,.check an make sure your gasket is a tight fit on the element an shell. ----------
