Yep, it was just a jam. Mac on bass said, "Let's do something funky" and he took off on that bass line. The others just jumped in and improvised.
This was last night. Before the jam we presented a Blues Jam 101 seminar to teach jam tips to newbies. It went VERY well. We'll be doing it again in a couple months.
What fun, I like how the boys played together, and let each other do their thing. That and the smiles on their faces. The recording sounded good on my headphones, thanks.
"Let's do something funky". Jamming with pros is great because everyone knows what to do but develops bar to bar off of each other instead of what we knew already. I worked for years with a blues master who wouldn't rehearse for this very reason. NEVER a set list and would ruthlessly call tunes we had never done and every key known. On the edge by design.
Littoral, I've been in bands that practiced twice a week (groan) and bands that never practiced. The difference is usually that the second type of band is made up of seasoned pros. In my most recent band (The Blues Allstars) we worked out a few times at the very beginning and then never again, and we were together two years and played festivals and big clubs. A lot of it has to do with the front guy who leads the band.
In the video here we had Brad Stivers who is a total pro even though he just turned 21. Mac the bass player is a veteran of top regional touring bands, so he knows the deal. Everybody on stage has years of high level experience. Not every jam set sounds like this!!!! LOL. That is why I put it up.
