I'm on the verge of buying an ipad - not just for home recording, but mostly for low-hassle home recording. Is this a terrible mistake? Also, is the inbuilt mic okay for this or is it worth getting an apogee gizmo for plugging in? And Garageband or some other app?

I don't need anything fancy - just the ability to record harp and guitar, create the odd backing track, simple editing and better quality recording than my phone.

Help!

I'm writing this on an iPad. My recommendation is get the standard sized iPad as it's easier to read and type on. Storage might become an issue. Mine is a first generation with 16 gigs. When I update in a year or two I'll get at least twice that storage space. Note Apple is coming out with 128 gigs soon. I use the internal mic with a free recording app for very quick feedback. Usable mic but for rough work. I also have GarageBand and an Apogee connector. I mostly use it for guitar but it works well with bullet mics. Some of the vintage amps sound good with harp.

Note the iPad has become my main computer. Still have a PC but it's little used. iPad is great for email and Internet plus I utilize lots of apps that make my life a little more manageable.

if you want to record, buy an audio recorder. for $99 you can get a zoom h1 and get great recordings.
