We hit a pawn shop yesterday to see about a mic. It was my birthday so wife said let's get you something. First shop, first person I asked, first mic she showed me, was a Shure 585 hi z. No cable, and on/off switch rather than volume pot, but for the price it was a steal after we talked them down about 25%! Got it home, put a cable on it, and this thing ROCKS! Good clear signal but with some breakup capability. Nice harp sound and definitely good for vocals as well.
I had been looking for a dual duty mic for the 4 piece format I'm in, makes it much simpler.

$30 plus tax. wooooo-HOO!

Congratulations! The 585 has been my favorite mic for years. It won't break up like a vintage bullet, but it does have a sound I love through an amp, and works good with PA. If I am just singing a few, it works fine, though a regular 58 (or Greg Heumann's Ultimate 58) is better for vocals.

I have the 585SAV with volume control. I use a Shure A95 line matching transformer when I need low z.

Here is a link to the fact sheet, and another to the discontinued mic page"

Nothing like getting a good deal on your birthday. I hope you get a lot of use out of it.

In fact BT, I WOULD like that vc model. I discovered a while ago the on-off switch has been bypassed or is just stuck on anyway.

This mic is already coming in very handy for working on the next cd with Jolene. Since I can sing and play harp through it there is less fumbling at crucial moments.

First gig was tonight with the 585. Very happy with it for vocs and harp both! It's some lighter than a bullet and the sound is cleaner but still can get some rough stuff depending on tightness of cup and proximity of harp to mic. I used it both in a stan

Ever have a moment where you kick yourself for waiting so long to do something?d and hand held and I can say there is absolutely no complaint about it at all. My partner Jag liked its sound as well and it was one less mic and cable to mess with too.
