Today I was doing my usual daily practice. Started with working on tongue blocking, moved on to one of Adam's lessons, spent some time getting all the bends accurately on the 2/3 draws. Like most other days I was wrapping up practicing by making the most atrocious squeaking and squaking noises in a desperate attempt to overblow. Usually this is a futile exercise that only results in tormenting my dog! Except today was different. Today I finally got a clear note to sound. After some work I was able to hold the note(6 overblow) and confirm it was in fact an overblow. And let me tell you in over a year of playing I've never been so content just playing one single note over and over until I was literally blue in the face! Anyways, I'm pretty fired up on this right now. So back to the woodshed to play this note over and over and over.

OBs are a lot easier to get if you mute the sounding reed--take the coverplates off.

@ 7 o 3 Cool man, way to go!
Say hello to some "missing notes".
I just made an overblow harp for a friend of mine, mailing it to him today. I look forward to him emailing me with happy news like what you're sharing with all of us here.

Good job man.

Great news! I feel your happiness as I too just started OB not too long ago. It's great to have additional "tools" in your playing arsenal. I am especially enjoying first position playing now with utilizing 4-6 OB Good job!

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. I couldn't get the 4 or 5 OB but hopefully they'll come quicker then the first one!

@Stan, I'd disagree. Personally, I think they're very very cool. They do have a slightly different feel then normal notes. But when I hear a competent player use OB proficiently I think they're really bad ass. In my opinion (once I get them down) they'll open some doors. I've heard some very simple OB licks that just aren't possible without them.

anyways, I'm still stoked to get the first one under my belt and feel like I can put another notch in that belt.

Good for you Seven! Keep at it and a day will come when you wonder how you made it without them. I've been practicing them daily now for 5 years. ALong with overdraws, they have become just another note and I play them without thinking "uh-oh..here comes an overblow".
I'm also finding them very useful in postion play. It has totally changed the way I play in 1st, 4th and 5th positions as overbends make the blues scale(as well as others) possible in all octaves.
I'm finding them useful in warbles and double stops. Sometimes in 2nd position I catch myself play the 5 ob bent up 1/2 step instead of the 6 blow for the root because it is a much more flexible note.
I'm sure I'm extreme instead of the norm but I just love playing the overbend style.

Way to go Daddyo, I am just starting out on this road and I'm resigned to it taking time, I spent Months and Months trying for my first bend and I can still remember the exact time and place I did one, that's how big a deal it was to me so well done,I hope to be joining you in the OB clubhouse soon.
