What are the reasons we learn music, is it only to perform it or get really good at it? Are there other reasons to learn it? What are your reasons for learning music?

I always wondered how music worked, if it was hard to play an instrument or make a song.
In junior high we had 9 weeks of "music" class, which was music notation and chopsticks. Fortunately in elementary school our music teacher was more into direct experience of music.
I was especially curious after the Asian boy band craze here in Indonesia...some of the most god-awful music ever made. Many great singers and musicians in the streets and in clubs though.
