I was surfing through youtube the other day and clicked on a blues vid that didn't have an image attached to it, and much to my surprise it was me! I remember it clearly because it was far from my best performance ever. I'm fronting a bass, guitar, drums trio on harp and vocals - three guys I've never played with before. I hate the way some of my bends are off and I'm kinda rushing it. On the plus side I know I can do much better, I was having an off day. And it did get two "likes". These days everybody has a camera and you never know when you're going to be recorded! Has this happened to anybody else?

Yep, all the time. I hate it when I can't edit (or delete) the video....

If you play out - it's going to happen. I used to ask performers if they minded me posting to youtube when I shoot video. They where usually surprised I ask - but appreciate it and pretty much always said yes. I am not as strict about asking anymore - though I'm thinking I still should.
There are usually a number of people shooting iphone (or better) videos at any given gig - and at this point it seems 'assumed' that if you play in public , you agree by default to being video'd - and posted online.

That's gotta feel weird. I haven't seen anything quite like that, where I didn't know it was me before I opened it, but I have had that vaguely queasy feeling when people have posted their videos and I see the show, wish the sound was better...I do think it would be good if people asked permission to publish things. I'd rarely be happy with it of course. I noticed quite a few cameras last weekend. Only 1 person asked permission, and told us they were shooting for a local newspaper.

Yep, it's the smartphone videos that get immediately uploaded to Facebook.

i always ask permission before recording anyone i don't already know is cool with it. for folks that don't know me, my pitch is that i'd like to record, will send them a copy, and that nobody else will see/hear it without their permission. some don't care, a few want to see/hear it before approving posting, surprisingly few say no. whatever their answer, i abide by it. it's a point of honor with me.

Garry has the MO down solid. You should always get the blessing of the performer before posting it up in public. Give credit where credit is due and help out the performer. We all need lovin bro'.

some people don't want video evidence of their playing in a band for tax reasons.
