These are my two favourite harps. What I find they have in common is thickness. They are both very svelte when I compare them to Suzuki Harpmaster's and Seydel 1847's. This month Andrew is optimizing a Special 20 for me, and I hope there will be others in the future, but budget limitations will encourage me to work on some less used harps on my own. One thing I might do is try replacing a Special 20 comb with something aftermarket bamboo or Corian. So that leads me to my question. Given the Special 20 comb is recessed will aftermarket combs, all of which seem to be sandwich style, add to the Special 20's thickness and make it feel more like a Harpmaster or 1847?

No , it's the same thickness .But you loose comfort and you may have leaks between the covers and the plates .

Maybe.

It depends on how thick the combs are. On a stock SP20, the reed plates are closer together than on an aftermarket comb, but there is a lip that ends up being almost the same height in your mouth anyways.

IMO, I just use the stock comb 99% of the time anyways. If I am going to personally use an aftermarket comb, I then simply use Micropore tape to help elimnate leaking from the cover.

If I am ordering new and want to use SP20 covers, which I have tons of, I just put them on a Marine Band.

You can gasket a SP20 comb too, if you want to.

Followup for HarpNinja. Guessing that gasketing stock Special 20 combs is to help minimize leakage. Sort of an alternative to very flat aftermarket combs and flat sanding reed plates while retaining the original Special 20 look and feel. I haven't noticed gaskets advertised. Are they available commercially?

I think that stock SP20 combs are flat .The leaks come from : no-flat reedplates& bad tweaking ( or no tweaking)
This is just what I believe...

sorry for my bad english !

But MIKE is right , it's better to gasket the SP20 .
Personally , i don't know how to flatten the reedplates .
