That is a great interview, and kudos to Dave Barrett for making it public.
Here's what I got as Kim's main points (for success): 1) Lots of "face time" exploring and learning the instrument, not because you have to, but because you love doing it. 2) Finding your own voice with the instrument 3) Improvising. Blues is one of the genres of improvised music. 4) Leave space for the other musicians.
I think a lot of us forget the importance of the third point.
