My 1 year super champ XD has a rattle sound when i play my affinity strat though it,I thought maybe tubes were going bad,its my 1st tube amp,I tapped them with a pencil and the didnt rattle.I just started noticing the slight rattle awhile back,But that doesnt mean ,It wasnt there all the time,But im not sure.

So I hooked up one of my cigarbox guitars ,the one with a cheap single coil pick up,And it sounds great no rattle ,with slide,or fretted notes.

I hooked up a bullet harp mic played some though it no rattle.

With the squier affinity strat it rattles if I pick a few notes hard.

I was wondering strats have the PoP sound ,that Great sound that strats are know for ,Thats why I love strats

could that be making the tubes rattle?

The afinity is a decent guitar it doesnt have high dollar pickups ,but nice warm ceramic pickups,i say this because i was wondering maybe the cheaper pickups might be the problem,But my CBG I built with some old parts from a real cheap guitar, that was about as cheap as they come, that i had laying around the house.

It bugs the hell out of me,I was thinking about trading it in for a nice solid state amp,But Man do i love the Tone of the tube amp, even with a little rattle.

Im wondering because it works great with other instruments if its the amp

any thought on the matter greatly apreaciated

thanks JD

I just hooked up my resonator JT-900 which has a humbucker up front and It does rattle some with it,Its not real loud when it rattles but its there.Kind like when you shake a light bulb thats burned out ,sort of like that but not as loose,The amp has only been moved a few times most times. It sits in the same spot,But ill check to see if anything has wiggled loose.I think it does it at all volumes most times i play at only 3,I havent even really cranked it up,I did bring up to about 4 tonight and it still does it,But most times theres people watching TV or something so I dont get to loud

Old tube amps don't become younger, don't it? ;)
I use VST plugins emulating a lot of types of tube equipment: amps, pedals etc.
I would say if you not too match involved in the live gigs, it's pretty good up-to-date solution.

Is it a tinkling type rattle?

Try a 5751 or 12AT7 in the preamp tube position. It'll change the tone slightly, but see what effect this has on the rattle.

I'm not sure if this has any bearing on the likelihood of a valve being responsible for the rattle or not, but fwiw I believe the 12ax7 in that amp is simply a phase inverter, the preamp is ss.

Most of the guitar players have found the problem is a combination of things.

You can try loosening the chassis screws to move the chassis all the way forward.

Some have swapped the speaker out with success, while others replace all tubes-JJ 6V6,Tungsol 12ax7.

Most have discovered its the baffle, but no cure yet as it only has two small "mounting points".

Its been a long time sence I had a amp,Back in the day I had a few solid state amps,I dont remember them having rattling problems or needing any adjustment,Is this a problem thats more prone to tube amps,Not the tube rattle of course;-)But the having to tighten stuff.

Depends on the amp...more common on some models than others. Many apparently "mechanical" rattles aren't.

Are you saying that you have cured by tightening something? Good to know, if you have.

You only tapped the 1st tube? ANY tube can be microphonic (though it would be a stretch to think thus could come from the rectifier tube.) Tap them all.

At our jam recently we had a loud amp rattle issue (like yours - sensitive to the kind of tone being input). Turned out to be the mfg's logo plate on the grill cloth. Make the sound and touch anything, inside and outside, that you can get your hands (outside) or a chopstick (inside) on. Don't rule out things that look like like they're part of the amp - knobs, grills, switches. Doesn't take much!
