Myth... do not ABUSE the harmonica E-V-E-R - unless you want to "break it" Bad technique has no time limit!

You "break-in" car engines. You buy a new harmonica and just start playing it. There are no moveable parts in a harmonica, so to me it seems like the whole idea of breakin' in a harp is based on folklore and nonsense. This, of course, is just my opInion.

There is one thing i don't understand : my 2 years old SP20 in A plays better is more powerful and has a mellower tone than my new SP20 in A . Does it mean that the 1st one is good and the 2nd not so good ?

@jiceblues Don't overdo it mate with the myth stuff!
Reality is you have just payed so many dollars for a small instrument and it totally depends on what YOU do with it.
Good luck, harmonicanick

@ harmonicanick : "so many dollars " ? no , just 28€ . Can you tell me why the same man with the 2 same harps ( one new , one used) , playin' the same lick , dont have the same sound ? Don't take me for a kid , i know that the magic ( if there is magic ) is in the player , not in the harp . I just wonder why two SP20 in A just don't play the same .

I think the harp breaks the player in I don't think there is any reason to treat a harp more carefully than usual at the beginning. For the sake of the harp at least. It might be good for players to think so though, just for the practice of playing gently... 1 thing that may happen is that small air leaks get plugged up with...er..for want of a better word, lets call it "spit"....I dunno, maybe that's a myth too? Your Sp20 might have tuning variations. Have you checked against a tuner? Maybe some minor difference in the comb? I mean if you're really interested you could try swapping the plates and combs and probably work out what was different..

Don't think there are tuning variations , but yes , the older one is quite leaky between holes 5&6 . The reedplates are not flat on this one . It changes the sound for sure... I'm so stupid i didn't even think of that... Well , it's not the "gunk" sealing the comb & reedplates because i clean seriously my harps very often... It comes from the "non-flat" reedplates. Thank's SUPERBEE !
