Hi guys, Well I turned 54 today and my wife picked up on my subtle hints over the last few weeks and got me a Metronome. I decided it was time to put some effort into learning my scales and honing my timing and was inspired by a lesson by Jason using a Metronome. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the correct BPM settings for different tempos,I.E. Slow Blues, Shuffle,Rock Beat, Tango etc. Also if anyone knows more Metronome based lessons on the Tube how about a link. Ta very much Geordie.

A fun thing to do, play your favorite recordings on your stereo and match the metronome to each song. It's a challenge, but not too difficult to get it right on. ---------- Sun, sun, sun Burn, burn, burn Soon, soon, soon Moon, moon, moon

Once again, there is no holy grail of one correct answer.
Listen to music, play with the metronome, trust your own feel judgement and take heart that you can change your decisions as time goes on as to correct tempos for you. ---------- The Iceman

Iceman is correct about that and one of the first things you gotta learn about music is that the one size fits all way of thinking, like one kind of slow blues, one kind of swing, etc., that thinking needs to be flushed down the toilet ASAP and this doesn't apply only to blues, but to just about every music genre in general.
Geordiebluesman, you are taking a very important first step because at least 50 to as much as 70% of the harp players on the planet who aren't pros often are guilty of having absolutely horrible time, and not just during the entire tune, but also even when counting off the tempo of the tune as well, and two things I often see happening when counting off a tune are when it's a slow tune, the count gets sped up while counting and on uptempo tunes, the reverse happens.
Once you get more comfortable with these things, then the next step is learning the varying degrees of playing behind or ahead of the beat as far as the groove is concerned. Don't expect to learn these things in about 10 minutes or less because it takes work. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Thanks lads, and I have to say that after just one session with the Metronome I have found ALL of the above to be true!, I really thought I had good natural timing, I was wrong! I think this is going to be an interesting and fundamentaly improving process.
