Often when I review these videos I find the musicality of what I was doing to be quite good, focussed, present, and inspired! makes no sense... Maybe it does: A great Jazz Drummer told me one night after I described some feelings identical to your post:
" You are never as good as you think you are, and you are never as bad as you think you are"- John Yarling
How true that quote is by this Drummer Yarling. There is a very interesting point Violincat touches on here which I have a theory on. Some nights you get loads of new stuff out on your playing and get a kick of self satisfaction because you got it out there but as violincat points out often you review it and it isn't as good as you thought.(your standards now right, ha ha)I have huge respect for this artist. Other nights you think your playing is C....folk tell you it was great best ever etc and when you do your own check and listen it sounds not bad to you that is.
This happens in all forms of music particularly jazz simply because of the improvisational demands.
I believe this happens because at the point of execution on the nights you think bad but everyone thinks your best; you are probably playing more relaxed. You may be a little tired or fed up at the start of playing until you kick in and facilitates relaxation. You play some set stuff perhaps a little in the boxes to start and do your normal stuff then instead of progression into new areas you have been working on you think Oh F.... it and kind of just play. Probably some of your best work will come out at this stage totally unwittingly, but you as the artist can't figure it out and think you played not too well.
To kind of get this more often certainly in the jazz world sax example a lot of guys team up with another similar player, not necessarily style but ability,do it at home if the band set up don't run to extra guy. The problem I guess with harp is that when your such a great player who can you invite over, because there are only a few guys in the world that could do similar things. Hey what do you think guys imagine walking past an apartment block one afternoon and hearing Violin cat and Howard levy jamming away the afternoon. Now that would be cool. ........................................

Yep, that would be cool...... and what I'm hoping to get to see. We're booked for the "BluesCruise" in Jan.-It will be my first, but I've already signed up for Jan. 2011 as well. Jason Ricci, Tommy Castro, Magic Dick, Curtis Salgado, Annie Raines, Kenny Neal,... and those are just the harp players.
Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Johnny Winter, Joe Lewis Walker, Magic Slim... the list goes on. They supposedly have pro- jams and pro/am jams. Lots of "concerts" as well as spontanious jam sessions in the hall ways, piano bars,. For a whole week. I'm about to bust with excitement. Check one more off the bucket list for me!! Anyone else along for this ride???

The line up changes each year, but it's always kick ass. Taj is pretty regular, Watermellon Slim was on last years- I'm sure in the archives there is a list of past performers somewhere. And it always sells out- usually prior to the line up being announced. I was able to get the last 2 cabins available for the Jan. '09 cruise (I booked in April). There is also a Pacific cruise each Oct.- they just got back on Saturday.
If you are interested, go on the website, click on "cruiser community", then "cruiser chat" and read some of the recent posts- Sounds like they had a great time. I believe it's really an "up close and personal" experience with the musicians.
Maybe a MBH group for 2011???

'Very interesting musical points Violincat'
Go back a few threads. You'll find equally interesting musical points posted by our very own mere mortals. Some of us do know a thing or two. It's that kind of sucking up that puts me off the forum sometimes. Seriously. I loathe it.
X piano teacher, music teacher, and scholar of classical music.
EDIT: Please forgive my provocative tone. I really have seen a lot of that stuff and I think it undermines the site as a serious forum for serious musicians. That's my view, contentious as it may be. No offence intended, just my raw thoughts offered as they are. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Perhaps you're right, but do you have any thoughts regarding my dislike of the obsequious attitude that some people on here show towards the pros?
If you don't have any regard for my qualifications then why should you have any respect for Jason's or anyone's? ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

I personally fall back on spelling and grammar when I have to decide the credibility of two unknown entities. While it's true internet keyboard typing can be a typo nightmare, there are tip-offs that nobody can blame the keyboard on. Trends emerge, patterns you can count on. Add to this the fact that browsers generally contain spell-checkers....well, like I said, trends emerge.
When I read an internet disagreement, I quietly compare typing and grammar, then manners and profanity usage. I compare these to the patterns mentioned above. Then I just log it away for my own information. This is how I decide for myself if an opinion is worthy of further research. Having said that, I've found a huge percentage of the information on most internet forums can be dismissed with no further impact on my life whatsoever. This one may be better than some, but it is not immune to the syndrome.
FWIW, my wife despises jazz. I love it. I also believe that most people hear it as playing all the notes at the same time...like my cat does when walking across the open piano keyboard. I feel strongly both ways...lol. Now, even I am having fun.

Unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't always come across in the written word. Otherwise, there would have been a few posts I've read on MBH that would have personally ruffled my feathers. For instance, there was a recent exchange where Buddha(yeah, I know who he is)posted a 'help me' string requesting advice on singing. Many of us chimed in, including myself, having been a singer for many, many years. I can only speak for myself, obviously, but my post would have been the same regardless who had originally started the thread. Then came a blanket response calling many who had posted advice or their 2 cents on the subject 'blues novices'. Unnecessarily condescending if meant seriously, even though I'm far from a 'novice'. Lots of pissing matches on here. Kinda sucks the fun out of it. ---------- Crescent City Harmonica Club www.myspace.com/harpboytodd www.myspace.com/crescentcityharmonicaclub www.myspace.com/am540

Ryan,
I'm not going to disagree with you; what I will do, though, is lay out my thoughts a little more clearly.
I have seen on here what I would regard as an awful lot of idolising over the months. I know, it's not a crime, but, it does get a biy cringe-worthy over time.
Ricci's remarks that are quoted above, they're not exactly not exactly Nietzsche. Sure, they make a valid point, but if I made them or you did, you can bet your last harp that they wouldn't get regurgitated in a new thread.
Congaron,
I use a similar yardstick to you in these things. I might be an asshole, but I'd rather be one with at least a modicum of manners.
EDIT: Ryan, I see that you just removed the post I was replying to while I was typing. Oh well, no matter. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

Sorry, was beginning to question if I should comment. You could be right. I do know what youre referring to, this just might not have been a prime example. Either way the thread digenerated quickly to talk of blues cruise.
