Played a coffee shop in Holland once, a blues festival they were putting on. Paid well but the audience was not too responsive. It was like they were comatose.
Did several youth centers as well which had in house dealers. That's were the "legal" selling of pot started in Holland, in the youth centers. The crowds there were very enthusiastic but then they sold beer as well.
One of the great misunderstandings about Holland is the idea that you can smoke anywhere and that it's rampant. It's actually fairly restricted, especially in bars. The interesting thing is that the Dutch attitude is that if you're older than 20 and still smoking pot it's a bit childish. They have the lowest rate of addiction in the industrial world. The average age of what addicts they do have is relatively old as well. In the late 30s as opposed to teens and early 20s of most other countries.
The Dutch have a very pragmatic attitude to vice in general. They realize the obvious, that never in the history of mankind has anyone ever eradicated any of the common vices such as prostitution or getting high. The best a government or a society can do is to educate and attempt some control. Making such activities criminal does nothing but create criminals of the otherwise law abiding, put a huge some of money into the genuine criminal class, and create a whole range of problems much worse than the vice one is trying to "stamp out".
As someone once said, - after taking a deep breath, than another, then holding it - "Drug war? I didn't know I was at war let alone winning it?" ---------- LSC

LSC, you said it mate! wise words indeed, when is society gonna wake up to the fact that people enjoy having sex and getting high, and why should one high be legal and one not. Not every one is good looking or at ease with the other sex so why not have legal sex workers to give those people the pleasure the rest of us can get through a relationship? I have a very disabled terminaly ill friend who was once an able bodied dope smoking beer drinking girl pulling jack the lad, now he is paralised blind and mute but he is still the same guy inside so we took him to Amsterdam 2 years back and got him high and got him laid, thank fuck for the Dutch! he had one last mad weekend with the lads before he became bedridden.

@geordiebluesman - Taking your mate to Amsterdam was a brilliant move. The dude was very lucky indeed to have friends like you.
