I've never heard SouthSide Johnny (and the asbury Jukes) mentioned on the board here. I've known him as a rock and roll singer for years and always took note of him playing harmonica. But today I downloaded his album "Messin' with the blues" and all I can say is WOW. If you've never heard of them do yourself a favor and pick up this album.

He's not the best harp player you'll ever hear but he's come a long way and definitely gets the job done. Coincidently the intro to the song "better days" is what first got me interested in playing harp......

They brought him to do a blues festival one year and he and the band were entertaining, got to see koko, gatemouth romp and stomp too…

I love Southside Johnny - no, not the best harp out there, but that's not really what it has to always be about is it?

Phenomenal keys and kicking horns. Sensational live band.

Saw them at the Santa Monica Civic back in the late 70s. One of the best live bands ever. Used to have one of their live albums, "Reach Up and Touch the Sky", on vinyl.

Great thing about that album was that it seemed like they recorded several shows and then picked the best performances for the album. The funny thing was almost all the songs were the last one of the set on a given evening. Virtually every tracked finished with, "Thank you and good night!"

I also recognized some of the Asbury Jukes, La Bamba for one, as members of Conan's house band.

Been a Southside fan since the first album in the mid 70's so this thread caught my attention. There are other artists and songs who I wouldn't usually associate with harmonica but who had some success with songs that featured harmonica. I've got a fairly substantial CD collection I've been putting into iTunes for iPod use. Yesterday downloaded a compilation that included the Ozark Mountain Daredevils doing If You Wanna Get To Heaven. Simple but very memorable harmonica part.
