If a song is in D, then you can play 3rd position on a G harp right?

Close.
If you want to play in third position in D, you need to grab your C harp.
On a G harp, in second position you play in D.

Third position is always one whole step below the key being played by the band

@Carl ? in third you are playing in the same key as the band. Band in D you are playing in D but using a C harp. Instead of in 1st postion using a D or in 2nd position a G

If band in A, third position harp would require G harp, G would be F, F would be E, E would be D, D would be C harp, etc

Eb harp to play F in third position, not E harp. An E harp plays F# in third position.
@bloozefish: Yes, third position on any kind of C harmonica is the key of D.

Isn't Smoke Stack Lightnin' played in E minor? That would put the harp in A second position. Yet when I hear it played by the Wolf on YouTube, it fits better with a G harp in second position which would put the band in D.
I guess they changed keys......
Or the band could be in F?

Like groyster said, get a circle of 5ths diagram that works for you. Google circle of 5ths pics and there's a ton to choose from. The one from Morden Guitat Lessons.ca by Ken Hiebert is a good one.
---------- You Tube = goshinjk
I'm workin on it. I'm workin on it.

Why was/is this so illuminating to you? I'm not challenging you or anything, just curious.
Thank you!!
