Beginner here, working on throat vibrato. A simple question to experienced players: what is a good top vibrato speed to aim for?

Slow I can do, fast I can't and I'd like to know what to work towards.

I don't think its about setting speed, its about building up the muscles and neuro muscular pathways. To get speed you need to relax, so the antagonistic muscles don't slow you down. Adam does a video about it somewhere.

Libertad - thanks, yes I agree that's the way to do it. That said, I would like to know what sort of speed someone with a good technique is able to command.

Relaxation is very important not only for getting a fast vibrato, but also getting one as slow as what you hear from guys like Howlin' Wolf, James Cotton, and Junior Wells as well, plus being able to vary the speed as needed.

The speed of my vibrato is default… in other words – when I decide to use it… it automatically kicks in at a set speed that isn't fast or slow, its somewhere in between... I would characterize it as a “smooth vibrato”…I am able to give the impression of it slowing down rather dramatically by using cupping and hand techniques.

Just a casual guess, anywhere from 3 to 8 Hz is typical, depending on the tempo of the tune.
