Got the word this morning direct from Brendan in reply to a question I put to him on YouTube.

The Suzuki Manji will have Compromise Tuning.

Is this for real? Is everybody actually sure it won't be Equal Temperment? If they swing it towards a Compromise Tuning I may give her a go.

Where I buy my suzuki promasters for $43.00 dollars plus shipping said he was going to get some and that would be the cost. Sometimes if I get the bid I can get a promaster from him for $38.00 plus shipping. Guess somebody can start a thread of places that sell cheaper.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Equal tuning = good for melody but poor for chords.

Just intonation tuning = good for chords but can be poor for melody good for blues.

Compromised tuning = compromise between Just and Equal Tuning = good for chords and good for melody playing too.

Ptolemaic Tuning is generally referred to as "just intonation". To create perfect major third intervals, this system alters one of the fifths, D-A. (And thus the major sixths are also perfect, except for F-D.) This makes the triad D-F-A quite unusable, although the others are perfectly in tune. The Just Intonation scale employs two different sized tones in the ratios 9:8 and 10:9, and thus it can hardly be considered satisfactory even for purely melodic music

In equal temperament the octave is divided into 12 equal semi-tones each of 100 cents. The intervals are then built from the semi-tones. For example a fifth is 7 semi-tones and a third 5. The Equal temperament scale is universally used today in Western music.

"Compromise temperament" is something of an awkward term, as all temperaments are by definition some sort of compromise. However, this term and the similar term "compromise tuning" have in the harmonica world been used to describe a fine tuning of the harmonica that is neither Just Intonation nor 12 Tone Equal Temperament, but somewhere in between. The idea of these tunings is to give smoother chords than those given by 12TET, without having the harmonica deviate too far from the tuning of the accompanying instruments.

The degree to which the tuning is compromised is a matter of personal preference. Perhaps the most obvious place to start is with what guitarists have come to call "half tempered" tuning. As the name suggests, this involves tuning a given note halfway between its equally tempered value and where it would be if you were to tune justly.
