OK I'm gradually getting 3rd position under my belt. (Mainly middle and top octaves at the moment). Before I sort the lower end out a question has formed in my mind. Will the octaves, splits and chords all change with 3rd position? I haven't seen this mentioned before and because the harp will be played in a higher key to 2nd position, it makes sense to me that the 2nd position chords won't work in 3rd position. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Everything shifts around.

For example: The 2-3-4 draw chord that's the tonic in 2nd becomes the IV chord in 3rd. The 1-4 octave that you'd use for a V chord in 2nd works for the tonic in 3rd.

I find it useful to think through the arpeggios of the I7, IV7 and V7 chords. In 3rd position the I7 is 1 draw, 2 draw, half-step bend, 3 draw whole-step bend and 4 blow; the IV7 chord is 2 draw, 3 draw, 4 draw and 5 draw; the V7 chord is 3 draw whole-step bend, 4 draw half-step bend, 5 blow and 6 blow.

D E F# G A B C#
If you play a C harp in 3rd pos you will play in D. If you look at the D major scale you see that the 4th degree is G and the fifth degree is A. G is second pos and A is 4th pos. If you are playing over the 4th cord your old 2nd pos licks and cords will work. Over the fifth cords there are no cords there but A minor is the relative scale of C major so the first pos stuff can work if you land on A some times if you play a minor song.
Hope you can understand what i say!

Thanks @timeistight. That makes sense.

@Millsom. Yes thanks. It will take a bit of working out but I'll get there.

jon gindick said that 2 & 3 draw will clash if not bent in 3rd position...it seems he is right...dont know why...the best thing about 3rd position is that you can resolve on 1,4 and even 8draw

"jon gindick said that 2 & 3 draw will clash if not bent in 3rd position"

Not necessarily. Unbent 2 & 3 draw work over a major IV chord in 3rd position.

BTW, the arpeggios I gave above all contain major thirds and may need to be altered to work over a minor blues. As always, let your ears be your guide.

Tooka, seems to me your putting the cart before the horse...For a $16.95 Dave Barrett book - you'll have everything at your fingertips that you need to know to "SERIOUSLY" get from point A to B as far as 3rd is concerned...Once you get through a "good study" book, then your questions will more tangible. Are you using any kind of study material at the moment to help enlighten you?

Many thanks for taking time out to do that Frank. It was very kind of you. I'll be getting it from Amazon. Just what I think I need. Many thanks again.

You’re welcome... Trust me you'll be thanking David Barrett after you get that book...If your finances are in order, I would recommend a companion book to enhance the "Building Harmonica Technique" book...And that is his book "Mel Bay Complete Classic Chicago Blues Harp"...You will be mentally transformed and ideologically enlightened with those two study books at your disposal. And you may even find them on Ebay?
