Willie Mitchell was the brains behind Royal Studios in Memphis and the Hi record label. He recorded all those great Al Green hits in the '70s.

The organ solo that blew your mind was probably played by Charles Hodges. The Hodges brothers (Charles, Teenie and Leroy on organ, guitar and bass) with the addition of either Howard Grimes or Al Jackson (moonlighting from Stax) on drums were the Hi Rhythm Section.

Damn Beard, that's a great version. I'm going to have to check out more of these artists.

Every time I hear My Babe, tis one pops into my head.

Ok, Doc picks it up a lot, but tune sounds the same to me. I wonder which one came first?

If you're talking about origins, I'd say that this one is closer. Don't know if she wrote it, might be traditional:

For my money, I like this contemporary version by Chris Wilson (wonder if he's related to Kim?)

Oh yeah, This Train, sure. I'll have to check into the chords for all of these.

rbeetsme, I always thought My Babe reminded me of some other tunes too. I think This Train is an old anonymous classic. Good to see you posting here, I noticed you disappeared from the Bushman forum. I was surprised you left, the way you defended John Hall, I thought you worked for Bushman.

Bob, I think a lot of people think I worked for Bushman. I met John shortly after he started Harp Depot in New Pal, IN. When he decided to launch the Bean Blossom Bluesfest in 1999 he paid me to photograph the acts. That's about it, only time I worked for John. We became friends and I shot most of the products for the HD website and later, when he introduced the Delta Frost, his Bushman website. I attended every event he hosted, Bean Blossom, Atlanta Dinkyfest, most of his Bushman Brewhouse events, ukulele events and continued to shoot for him, run his acoustic stages, harmonica contests and helped with the seminars, all either for trade-out or just to help. We even worked on a book together, yet to be released. He made me a Bushman dealer and I have sold a few harps when his stock was healthy. John and I are still friends, but I've been playing custom Marine Bands (thanks Kevin!) the last few years. so I've kind of lost interest in Bushman products. John fell on hard times, sold his Bushman bar and has been struggling to get his harmonica and uke business running again. He recently posted some stuff on his website that I thought was probably offensive to some and counter-productive to his business, so I asked to be dropped from his forum. I always enjoyed the Bushman forum but still have contact with many of the folks on facebook and elsewhere. Friendly place, more of a chat room than a music forum, but many of us attend the Bushman Bluesfest every year so we know each other pretty well. I continue to lurk there occasionally. As for the topic, yes, I think This Train is an old gospel spiritual.
