something I haven't tried too hard to find...until recently. Since I am a big fan of the EL84 tube...
I noticed this on Ebay and grabbed it out of curiosity mostly. It looks dangerous enough....i have tried it (with 4X10 alnico Rola's...and it does kick butt. Now I have to assemble the talent to make a head cab out of it. Odd shape...knobs on the side instead of front. Small obstacle...stay tuned.
This is a Philco (1954) Console amp. Probably stood on its tail end, inside the console, so the knobs could display when you lift the top panel. Those of you who remember, ..the phonograph would then be on the left, or right, of the knobs...notice chassis mounts in front, and the back...
6L6 Philco
Doing a rig this way gives me the pleasure of knowing it's something I put together, (roughly) my design, and for me...more mojo factor...I also have a Bassman, and it's just too damn heavy to lug around. This is half the weight of the Bassman.
Show n tell...work in progress..

JH....yeah, I was on the tail end of the console era. I can only imagine. My dad was a high end audio file nut. Classical music, too. And he liked it loud. Imagine the neighbors ears when they suddenly heard Mozart blaring at deafening decibels. At the other end of the street...I believe the gear of choice was Altec.
The heavy duty American made shit. He scrounged a pair of Voice Of The Theater speakers one day. Found em at a local movie theater going out of business sale. They stood 7X5X5 or so.. just huge cabs. They couldn't even fit in the living room. So he aimed em inside through the screens...from the porch...lol!
it was pretty cool, too. Yer welcome...;-)

...no such luck...TH. I rarely find anything like this, here in the islands.
The weather seals the deal. And there is nothing that will survive the salt and moisture in the air...bad stuff.
I found it.....uh...uhhhh! O>K....on Ebay! (sniped)
I think I may have really lucked out on this one. Very clean. Had to have it...when sniping, you may even pay a little more. But you will get it.
There is absolutely no money in doing what I have been doing for years. Taking old amps, changing a few caps and resisters, then giving them a new home. It is working so far. Try it. You'll need a cabinet maker, and an amp tech who knows tube amp circuits well(not all do). Mine has been working with me for ahwile now, and he's become tuned-in to what a harp player wants. Tube and tone wise...he dialed me in on this one. Charged me $75 to make sure I'm good to go. 3 prong chord, he replaced a bass circuit, checked everything else, hooked up a mic jack, and labeled which wire is what. Very important for us amateur electronics hacks.
My strength lies in cosmetics, easy wirings tasks..
and playing my ass off when it's right...I got the custom mic already....
stay tuned..I'll figure a way to sample it soon.
love the knobs...

ahhh...another favorite of mine. The Spherex 920
People don't realize what goes into one of these.

Personally, I recommend Gregs handy work on the grill. Hands down, the ONLY way to approach it, for me...now.
His handy work includes; carefully stripping the shell, removing the outer chrome-like finish, taking the cable "bib" off, and in some cases the stand hole as well. This will give you what you see in the photo.
His grills are custom, hand-pressure fitted, and give you an extra inch closer to the element...
..but, they are not chromed..
I chromed mine through a mainland platesmith. And it looks awesome!
You can skip this stage, as Aluminum will buff out pretty damn good, too. Though, chrome plating it will last a lifetime.
Aluminum will tarnish quickly and need to be re buffed.
Hey,..for a few dollars more, Greg can do the wiring and fix you right up.
I'm still sitting on about a dozen 920 shells myself. I have been taking my sweet time on several 200 customs of my own.

I have officially sold all my Spherex's...it won't be long (Greg). Something I will definitely find the time for soon. As they are very functional and unique mics for harp.
Much like the "Biscuit".
Greg (blowsmeaway.co)and his incredible metal and woodsmith skills are worth it. If he's not too busy.
There is simply nobody else who does it.

spent all afternoon yesterday figuring a way to safely carry it. The frame is light, and all I need to so is stick a handle somewhere secure. A little stain and a few clear coats, and it's done..Nobody looks at it anyway. It's the sound that matters, right now. I usually stay away from 6L6's. Too big and heavy and too much feedback in most cases. But not with this one..for some reason. I'm replacing all the tubes today. The tech who looked it over told me the tubes were indeed very tired. he said I can get maybe 15 killer watts out of it. He also told me I "could get 30 if I change the tubes..probably". It's the "probably" that I'm worried about. Ha!
If not then It's back to the tech to make it louder...what might it be then?
