It's not cowbell. I didn't use any of my Farmer's percussion stuff. I just clapped my hands, then processed it in Garage Band so that it had the right sound. The recording was made in three quick passes: harp, guitar, claps. The guitar was extremely rough. I would never release something this rough on an album. But under the circumstances, quick & dirty actually seemed like a virtue. I wanted to put a catchy melody in people's heads. Something you might hum. It reminded me very vaguely of the "Baby Elephant Walk" (1962):
