Hello harp players

I finally bought myself a Suzuki Overdrive yesterday. That's one awesome little instrument I tell you. I think if one figures out how to best play it one can do incredible things with it.

I really love the sound of the Overdrive and boy can you hit OBs and ODs, it's amazing! The only problem so far is the size of the harp. Being as small as any other diatonic harp what happens is that you sometimes close the "special holes" on the coverplates by accident.

Does anyone have experience with the Overdrive? Is there a recommended/reference way to hold it?

Any suggestions are welcome ;)

Cheers

Yeah just slightly hold it like a regular harmonica. Except there are problems with the cupping.

Don't know if you've seen this but Brendan Powers demonstrates the Overdrive here.

I played one once. I didn't like it at all!

Hey tookatooka that's where I first heard about the overdrive. I'm still figuring out how to best play it but I find it great so far as I do valved harps.

I really love to test these "exotic harps". I might even try one of these diatonic / chromatic crossovers like the Koch from Hohner. Or if they drop a bit more in price why not an XB40.

I got an XB40 it is bloody massive! It's like trying to play a Cornish Pastie and 2 reeds went flat after half a dozen plays, I was'nt impressed

Hehe yea, it's pretty thick. I guess cupping is a problem there too - unless you have reeeally big hands ;).

But I find the idea of being able to bend each and every note fascinating. I'm still experimenting with half-valved harps atm. Yesterday I even added valves to a standard Marine Band. Seems to work pretty fine so far - it's not even difficult to do.
