Are the reeds and plates {except for the groove in the MB plate the same for Marine Band and a Special 20? Just curious, since some people seem to install new combs on these harps and I'm thinking about it for a few I have {definitely the MB}. Also, having only bought my first MB just recently after owning playing very wide range of harps from SP20s to Seydels and Suzukis, I notice the MB has a substantially thinner comb compared to pretty much everything I have {1847,Session,Promaster, Bluesmaster, Manji} The Manji probably the closest but still a touch thicker. After you guys sand these things down to tighten them up, isn't that thing just really thin? It already feels skinny to me but then I started on a SP20...

Wouldn't it be nice if someone made an injection moulded SP20 comb which was just a touch thinner? (1mm thinner maybe) I know you can get acrylic combs but moulded would be better.

The reeds are the same. I believe the reedplates all start off as the same sheets of brass only to get cut (died? I don't know the correct term for how they punch the slots and other holes) differently.
As for sanding the draw reedplate, that only takes off a very small amount of brass. They are not any thinner at all after being sanded from a practical point of view. You are only taking an already smooth surface and making it as flat as you can.
You don't have to get a special comb, either. You can flat sand the stock MB comb as well as the draw reedplate and experience an airtight harmonica - if you do it correctly.

Thanks guys.
arzajac, thanks for the lowdown on the reeds and plates. As far as the comb goes, that's what i was thinking would really shrink if you flat sand it on both to make it even and tight. Plus since it starts out thin, it would seem to me to get even thinner. This plus the fact that it's thin {compared to everything else i have} to begin with. Hey, it's all personal preference as Tootkatooka indicated with his wish that SP20s could be thinner. I personally find the thinner harp not as comfortable to me.

After re-reading your post, I don't know why I thought you were talking about the reedplate thikness!
But again, flat sanding the comb doesn't take that much wood off. I don't notice a difference.
