Friday night I had a great gig. The Sparta is all about helping those in poverty escape it. I am proud to be involved in this project as a musician and as a special education teacher. My classroom - the smiling with hope bakery (a licensed commercial bakery) provides all their breads and baked goods. The place was packed and about 15 of the patrons were from the Center for Disabilities. These people love to dance and they kept the dance floor going all night. They tune into the music in ways that turn me on. They do things familiar and completely different than what you get from most people. I love working off their energy and my gigs that involve the disabled population are the most creative I experience. I ended up playing upbeat songs because that was were the energy was. This was one of my slow numbers and everyone took a rest but this one woman. She never sat down. I was hoping the "non disabled" people would take some inspiration from these folks but only a couple got up to dance. Why is when most white people get over 40 they quit dancing??????????????????????????????????????????
I hope some more videos show up of this gig. On a side note- I had some ear wax built up in my ears so I went to the pharmacy and got a ear wax removal kit the afternoon before the gig. Man that was a mistake. It clogged both my ears like I had earplugs in. I barely could hear and what I could hear was all bass and muffled. It was an incredible experience into being deaf. I played off inside my head more than my ears. The next day I went to the minor emergency clinic and they flushed them out and I hear again. This gig was a very moving experience musically in more ways than one!

Great exchanges for each others!

As for your question about dancing, I personnaly use(d)
to dance on commercial music which are "products".
I could absolutely not dance on good music but sometimes at maxi, clap or stomp the upbeat, the most important beeing to listen.
Dancing is made to sweat, I think, except in arts.
And if you in the States are proud to see folks dancing
on your (good) music, then I suppose there's a huge cultural difference between (at least) Western Europe and USA: dancing on good music would rather mean a disrespect, since it means folks don't listen to...what after all is the best tribute to a musician on stage, isn't it?

Really enjoyed that song Walter, would liked to have heard more of it. I would dance to music, but can't find anyone who will dance with me. That's what happens when you become an old man.

Good for you Walter. And good for those folks who are blessed to be served by, and cared about by you. I say you're never too old to dance, even if it's just shuffling your arse about in the chair.

thanks guys! I learn a ton from the special needs population about following your hear with no concern for what the world thinks. They are my biggest inspiration to keep going with spontobeat. I dance by myself Sarge. Yes in Europe people tend to sit and pay attention much more than here. I was shocked at my first gig in Europe. People listened intensely and then clapped. I figured we bombed and they were being polite. I learned in my 2.5 years of basing my band out of Brussels that response comes in many forms. I like them all but always feel good when someone is dancing. Walter
