We played a club in Estes Park CO last summer, where one of the house mics was an old Shure 545SD. I chatted with the club owner about it (Butterfield fan). He recently sold the club and bought a sailboat. He emailed me today to ask if I wanted to buy the mic, and asked me to name the price.
What is a fair price for this mic, and since I already have a SM57 do I really need it?
Thanks for any opinions you may have about this.

Rick, I have one without the pistol grip. The tone it gives is nice. I had Greg utimize and bulletize it. Check EBay completed listings for an idea as to the going rate. I think the 545s are a bit "ballsier" than the SM57. Plus mine is dual impedance , so I have it set up as High impedance and don't have to mess with an impedance converter.

I bought a mint condition 545sd on eBay for $50.00 a few months ago. I already had an old sm57 from the late 70"s which I really like but I think the 545sd has a slightly grittier tone. My 57 sounds warmer to me though. I like having both mic"s and also use one of Gregg"s bulletizers on them.

I wouldn't spend a lot. They aren't outrageously expensive when new. If it has the pistol grip, I wouldn't pay as much. Those things are a pain in the ass. Too big and bulky. I don't use the SM57 into an amp except in an emergency. I use the 545 quite a bit.

I decided to pass on the 545SD mic. I have four really good harp mics and the SM57 is substantially the same.

Rick - if you want a 545 that sounds DIFFERENT from an SM57, get a much older one. The SD, no matter its age, is the newest. The 545SD and 57 are very, very similar in tone. A first model PE54 is the best for blues harp, IMO. ---------- /Greg
