Hi folks! I've just registered here. What a great site! Decades of harp-playing experience just a mouse click away.
I have a particular challenge which I would appreciate feedback on. I play a few instruments (master of none!) but mainly I'm a harpist/keyboardist/vocalist, playing in a variety of styles , not all of which call for down-and-dirty 2nd position distorted playing. Often I play music at gigs which calls for keys AND harp (and vocals!) in the same piece, with pretty fast switches. Generally speaking, the PA settings for the vocals need to be different to what I need for the harp, which is why I'm reluctant to simply use the vocal mic for harp work.
My present solution is a fairly old "Microvox" harmonica mic (over 10 years old? Don't know the product number), which consists of a small (crystal?) mic element like the sort newsreaders used to clip to their ties, going into a small battery-powered pre-amp box with a volume pot via a thin phono lead.
I strap the mic to my left hand using a velcro strap, and send the lead down my left sleeve to the box at my hip. This means I can play the keys with both hands and an amplified harp on demand, which usually goes straight into the PA, via some signal processing. Generally works OK, but as the fingers of my LH are quite mobile, the harp mic sometimes gets a little out of position.
Anybody out there with relevant experience who can suggest any improvements to my set-up?

Joselito: I'm not good at copy and paste. Jimi Lee sent me this info. You might want to check it out. Its wraps around a 10 hole harp and fits into a neck rack. Good Luck AMT HR2 Harmonica Microphone - 10 Hole Product #AMTHR2 Item is in stock and ready to ship USD$ 180.00 Qty: Secured by Shopatron. Find out more. Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on email More Sharing Services Shopatron accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and PayPal. Description
HR2 Harmonica Microphone. - For 10 hole Chromatic's
The HR-2 is a clip on version of the HR1 hand held microphone system for Harmonica. The system is low in profile, which allows it to be used with a standard neck harness. The microphone comes with clips to attach to the Harmonica. The HR2 is the only microphone on the market that can be used in combination with a harmonica neck brace. To achieve the distorted "Chicago Blues" sound, one can overdrive the stage amplifier or use and overdrive processor rather than distorting the microphone. Comes with belt pack style preamp.

Thanks for the info KCz. I'll have a think about it.
Generally speaking, I haven't got on well with rack-playing, and I like the idea of a harp mic located on one of my hands rather than fixed in front of my face where it might interfere with what's going on with vocals etc. On the other hand, I'd be able to play LH keys as well as RH whilst playing the harp, so there's always pros and cons, and maybe I need to be a bit open-minded. Thanks again!

Welcome Joselito, I'm still new to this forum. I joined a couple of months ago and love it. I play keyboards and harp as well but haven't tackled playing them simultaneously. I know this amazing guitarist/harmonica guy in Los Angeles. His name is Pat O'Brien. He has a band called, Pat O'Brien and the Priests of Love. He plays both instruments and is a master at both. Go to www.priestsoflove.com and check him and his harmonica holder out. If that web address does't work, Google the name. Good luck! I was also thinking you could use a boom stand that had two necks, like a splitter. Just a thought.

Harmonica holders (racks) are typically uncomfortable and inefficient. HarpLock redefines the harmonica holder for gigging musicians. This one works! HarpLock provides fast, secure harmonica changes and allows the use of a single microphone to capture both vocals and harp. Play hands-free without a rack around your neck!
Traditional neck worn harmonica holder's tend to slip and move in use. If the harmonica is moving, it's more difficult to play. With HarpLock, the harmonica is securely held in place at the grill of the microphone allowing you to naturally play better. harmonica mounted with HarpLock
HarpLock is completely nondestructive, easily removable and guaranteed for life.
There are no moving parts, no threads to strip and HarpLock allows a musician to quickly attach or remove a harmonica with one hand.
HarpLock is lightweight, strong and holds harmonic ---------- And I Thank You !! KCz Backwoodz Bluz
