Hi,

I have bought myself a Hohner Special 20 in the key of D a few weeks backs. So I haven't used it alot.
Now I was playing it a half an hour ago and suddenly the 5 draw changed it's pitch. Instead of the normal 5 draw (G), it became the 4 overblow (F). I've opened him up but there doesn't seem to be something wrong.

Has this happened to anyone before? Is it possible to fix this?

I have had a Hohner Marine Band and a Lee Oskar for a much longer time and they still work perfect!

Is this typical for Special 20's or is it just bad luck?

Thanks,
Micha

Sounds like it went major out of tune. Sure there wasn't any problem with the reed? Was it ever in tune? Too much breath force?

Yes it was in tune. I was playing a song, everything sounds good, I start another and I realise: Wow am I playing the right note?!! Checked it with Bendometer and the 5 draw gives a 4 overblow. Is there anything I can try to fix it?

I'm no expert on the tekky stuff. But, I have heard comments like yours banded about before.

As far as I know - and I may be wrong here - there are still a few quality control problems with Hohner.

If you want, you can get replacement reedplates for SP20s for £12.95. Check out Harmonicas Direct:

Hmm ok.

But are SP20's prone to this kind of problems? Because I really like them. But if I have to buy new ones every couple of months...

I have a bunch of them Only one went flat on me, and it was like two years old. I'd say it's either a bad harmonica or you bent it flat.

I've got an A that I've pounded quite a bit, a G that doesn't have the annoying reed rattle on the 1 draw that I get on my MB Deluxe in the same key, and a D that's had a good work out. No problems so far.

I suppose that if you read through the pages of this forum, you'll find that most harps have one thing or another that bugs their owners. The SP20 is a nice harp and it doesn't cost the Earth.

Were you trying to bend draw 5? Surefire way to kill a reed quickly

No I wasn't doing that at the moment, altough maybe I did it accidently.

Thanks for the fast responses everyone! I'll get me another one as fast as possible.

Bad harp carma.

2 gigs, one year apart.
