I bought an old bullet MIC shell from a local guy who sell old things on the Chilean equivalent of eBay, and I want to restore it as my new project. According Harmonicamasterclass is a Universal 312 (http://www.harmonicamasterclass.com/vintage_collection.htm) but that is all the info that I found.
The element inside was broken, the shell is rusted and there is no connector or input jack, only an old spring hanging from the back hole (I assume that this MIC came whit a attached cable).
In the Harmonicamasterclass pictures this MIC appears whit a screw on connector. so I have a question:
¿Can I just put the screw on connector or do I need to make the hole bigger? the size of the holes are standards by any chances?
Here is a picture of the MIC, soon I am going to upload pictures of my MIC.
Not familiar with this particular mic, but if it just had the strain relief spring coming out the back you'll probably need to drill it out, depending on which connector you get. Some of the screw on connectors available on ebay have smaller thread diameters than the standard. You could also just put new cable in; there is nothing wrong with having the cable hardwired. ---------- Lucky Lester
i have had a bullet for many years with the strain relief spring taken off and the cable simply knotted inside the case. the hole around the cable has clear silicone caulk around it to keep the cable from rubbing and it works fine. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
@rogonzab,. Yes ,.it is a Universal ,.and has good tone ,.But you said your elements shot ? I just built one a model KD & the problem with Universal mics is it's weight,.very heavy and no room for a volume control
(talk with Greg H.about one of his inline VC's)
Your in luck with the Switchcraft 2501MP ,.If I remember the Hole is already drilled an taped,.they use the threads to hold the relief spring in place .
Also the knurled part of the 2501 fits right in the hole ! See pic's ,.Because of the thick walls you'll play hell getting a Shure CM element in there with a gasket.
Best bet is to send the mic to Greg H,..have him mill out the inside to fit a CM in there,. That will make it lighter also. Have him install the 2501 MP while he's at it.
@rogonzab,. Yes,.when you remove that old spring hanging from the back hole (you'll unscrew that spring) you should see that the hole is already threaded,.you can just thread your Switchcraft 2501MP in,. Hopefully Universal threaded the hole on your model,.if you can post pictures of your mic? Also hope your ceramic element fits in with a gasket,.you'll need a good gasket or you'll lose tone .
@jbone ,. yes ,.they were thickest walls I have ever seen on any mic as they measured right around 5/16". The weight was unbelievable,.you could not gig all night with this mic,.the bosses at the bottom held the transformer in place. The original dynamic elements tone was great for this mic tho,.
WOW !! WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! My grille is different also ,.
Yes with your thin walls you can fit a Shure CM in easy. I can't tell in your pic if your Hole is threaded? I believe it is not because of the screw that held the spring in place,I hope the hole is not oversized so you can tap it,..tho thats an easy fix. .
I wonder what yr both are ?
"Any advice on fighting that rust?" Sandblast is the best,.if you need it done I can do it . e-me Tho I see from your imageshack pics your well versed in Do IT Yourself ,.I luv your King Edward Harp amp !! ------------click Link Below -----------
I have the same mic and it is already threaded for the Switchcraft panel mount connector. Love the size of this bullet - biggest problem is excessive handling noise ; got to find the right gasket ! ---------- -=====- wendell
On saturday I am going to ask to the guys who do car painting how much they charge for this kind of job (they allready have all the tools and the paint).
rogonzab,. the guys who do car painting will do Fine ,.Just make sure they use clearcoat urethane with a hardener . Powder coating is good but for what most guys charge you could get it chrome plated >< Unless you go to a Pro Powder coater with the correct oven ,.most powder coaters use a lil' home toaster oven an the paint will chip anyway. And back in the day they (Mic Companies) only used enamel paint an look how well they held up after all these yrs >< ------------click Link Below -----------
@Wendell,. YA said "I have the same mic" Is it like mine or rogonzab ? About your excessive handling noise ,.I might believe its the thin wall model like rogonzab's ? ----------
@Wendell,.Sweet lookin mic ,.Luv those old AMPHENOL spring loaded CONNECTORs,..Hard to Find ! That 99A86 will do the trick !! ------------click Link Below -----------
