I was just at the Tokyo Official Launch of the Sub30 this afternoon
taniguchi-gakki Suzuki Sub30 Launch

They had all the current Sub30's laid out to test, as well as their other models (of which I have a few already) and an XB40.
First time I'd actually held and XB40, quite large I thought.

Anyway...I tried all three keys, keeping in mind all the points that people have written about on Harp-L and MBH forum.
I thought it was quite easy to bend, and was fortunate enough to have one of the Suzuki techs give me a few gentle pointers while I tested them.
I think it was the overly loud bending on the 6/7 blow I was doing that attracted him!

Gentle being the operative word for any new harp to break in, but it seems on initial play (and advice) the sub30 responds better with a bit of finesse rather than brute force.

I was pleasantly surprised and my answer to "Does anybody like the sub30 out of the box?" would be yes.

Koei Tanaka did a few demos (I filmed one, may put it up later) and spoke about a few things.
Edit: Tanaka-san called up a young kid to do "Air on a G string" on the sub30, and he did a great job.

I wasn't actually intending to get one as the current price is way outside my comfort zone for a gigging instrument (as mentioned in other posts)
but they had what seemed like a launch price discount that was too good to refuse so I picked up a C.

I like it so far.
I'm not going to mod it at all.
I'm going to play it stock as a test from here on in, apart from tuning or minor adjustments they recommend in the excellent little bilingual manual with it.
I can hear a little bit of the valve slapping others mentioned but it's not enough to bother me.
I'll have to see if that's picked up amplified.

I'm now in the process of adding it to HarpNinja and will post a demo with it asap.
But I won't be playing any Smooth Jazz or Classical, something a little grungier maybe!

Don't worry about, it's just a pdf flyer for interests sake. Nothing really important on it.

I didn't make it, just providing the link!

there is something wrong, imo, of buying a new harp in which you are directed to make some immediate adjustments by the manufacturer!
brendan's last harp, power bender(?), was very leaky and he said the screws needed to be tightened. not that difficult to do, but c'mon!
if they know the screws need to be tightened, why aint they just tightened before the covers get installed?
and now this one? they even have a manual that tells you what to adjust??

Eharp- at least it's more honest to say that you need to tweak it than pretending you don't. Which every other manufacturer does...

Thanks for your views and posting Komuso.

very true,pistolcat. kudos to them!
perhaps the buyer should relish the disclosed known-to-manufacturer type of flaws.
heck. maybe they should be content to pay a little more because of the honesty AND the manual.
and maybe even just a tad more because the problem is identified and the buyer doesnt need to spend the time determining why a brand new harp has issues.

then, again, i had been getting the impression from other threads that the quality of the other harps has gone up.
(maybe they didnt want to waste the time making a manual.)
lol

You can read their recommendations for tweaking it here
Troubleshooting
See the Maintenance section on far right menu tab.

At the moment I'll reserve final judgement on it till I've played it for a while and see how it performs without major adjustment or mods.
I kind of see it like the Suzuki overblow I bought years ago, which I could never really use. It was a good idea but you needed spaghetti fingers to really play those neat holes in the back. Now it's just a backup D harp in case one of my LO's blow out while playing.

I hope this turns out to be more useful. I think it will be, but I'm also of the mind it needs to be more or less perfectly playable without mods, even at the great discount price I got it at.
The future of harmonica is high quality low cost ( ~$30-40) harps not premium instruments, especially if they can't be played well OOTB.
