Hi Guys, I went down to Lancashire last weekend and bought all of Kingleys gear, Amp,Harps Mics etc and a huge collection of CDs.
I recon there must be about 300 and they pretty much cover every Harmonica player you've ever heard of and a whole bunch that I have'nt and that's the thing, total overkill.
I know this collection contains countless gems but I don't know where to start so who do you suggest I listen to?, whoever you say it's quite likely that I now own some of there work so come on guys help get the ball rolling and make your suggestions below, tell me who you recomend and give me a rough idea of their style and I'll take it from there.
Cheers Geordie.

I would start with Jason Ricci, then Jasson Ricci, followed by Jason Ricci.....

You have probably guessed I am a fan. Seriously it would be better to know what you prefer. Are you into more traditional players or contemporary?

Cheers

Martin

I like most styles from Sony Terry to William Clarke and of course Jason.

I would recommend starting with the one on top of the stack. ;-)

Why did Kingley sell all of his gear?

It depends what your goals are and you didn't supply a list of what you bought.

As I said there are about 300 CDs so I can't list what I've bought that's why i say tell me who YOU would listen to if you could listen to anyone cos I've probably got something by them, I'm just a bit overwhelmed by the shear number of artists and don't know where to start.
OW,Kingley has given up gigging and decided he was happy enough just playing at home and being a VERY good player only feels he needs one Harp so he sold the rest to me! Right place right time.

i think Kingley has made a mistake, however lucky you!!

I am fed up with old blues and only find JR, JJ Milteau, and BP inspirational now

Just play along with the cd's one by one and enjoy, (whatever they are..please let us know what they are)

Muddy Waters. Waters never had a bad harp player in his band and they collectively wrote the manual on how to accompany a blues singer and play in a blues band.

Geordie: I don't know why nobody has yet asked this, but you would be doing a huge service to this forum, and to the blues harmonica world, if you simply created a file and listed all of the CDs that you purchased.

One more ditto for timeistight as well as Adams comment.

Being British I would imagine you'll have some Paul Lamb, Nine Below Zero and maybe some Lester Butler/Red Devils since he was more popular over there. Might look for Canadian Richard "King Biscuit Boy" Newell with or without Crowbar. For the rest there's Lazy Lester, Rod Piazza, Jerry Portnoy, Sonny Terry, all the usual suspects.

It doesn't have to be that bad if you rip the CDs into iTunes. (That'll take a while, but you'll probably want to do it anyway.) Once you've imported them all, make a playlist of them, select all the songs in the playlist and hit copy (regular old control-c or command-c depending on your OS). Then paste the list into a text editor.

You don´t say what level you´re on, and I think that would affect recommendations.
I would say do NOT start with "Jason Ricci, Jason Ricci and Jason Ricci" as suggested above unless you´re pretty advanced as a player. (IF you´re an advanced player you could probably find Yazoo´s "Harmonica blues" in the collection and that will keep you occupied for a while. Yeah, they played harp even before JR came on the scene.)

Othwerwise LW´s collected; JJ Milteaus "Routes"; BWH´s live stuff w Ronnie Earl; Satan and Adam; John Cephas and Phil Wiggins. Should give you some variety.

Most iPods should hold 300 CD's.

How did you like the Earring George stuff?

I agree with timeistight: Listen to Muddy Waters. His first instrument was harp, and he hired the best players. He knew how to integrate them into his music to get the best of the harp and the band.

Also listen to Jimmy Reed, Paul Butterfield, so many others.

I have 1000 blues songs all with harp on my iPod, which I listen to every day while working out.

Frank, 8 gigs is a LOT of harp tunes! Mine is only 4 gigs. It doesn't hold all my harp collection but it is way more than enough for a week of workouts.
