I dropped my Samsung Epic 4g when I got to work. It powers up, etc, but the screen doesn't work - it is just black. I called about getting it looked at, and the bench fee is $80 plus parts. I can get a refurbished one from eBay for about $100.
I've never had to replace a phone before a contract is up. I don't like Sprint and am thinking of going Verizon. Actually, I was going to get a new iPhone this winter.
Any commentary on cell phones? Like, should I hold off until the new iPhone, jump to Verizon now, etc?

Check YouTube for screen replacement videos. I've seen them for the iPhone and it looks relatively simple. You could probably get a screen from eBay. Just a thought.

You don't have to renew your contract if you supply the phone. You only have to if you're getting a phone through the carrier that they subsidize - like an iPhone for $100. News of the iPhone 5 should be out very soon, but a 4S is a hell of a good phone and you should be able to get one pretty cheap. especially after the 5 comes out. ---------- /Greg

Thanks, guys. It sounds like I have a non-smart phone I can use for free. I also called the local Sprint store (after calling other repair shops) and they are saying a flat $35 to fix it...which is odd as they don't know what the issue is.
I might just use a loaner phone and wait to get a refurbished 4S. That way, I can let my Sprint plan run out. I have 171 days before it is up, and I am technically on a family plan with my wife...which adds another 3 months to us making the jump.
A used 4S is about $300 on eBay. I know they are way cheaper if you reup or jump ship, but if I wanted to go to Verizon today, I'd have my early termination fee (which I just called on locally - won't reimburse), prorated bill, and price of the new phone (about $300)...plus 2yrs to upgrade again.
If I use the loaner, I can get a used 4S for about the same AND get an iPhone 5 or something as early as the spring (would wait it out as long as I can, though).
I hate dealing with stuff like this.

I replaced screen on 3GS for $30. Fiddly job, but for someone skilled with working on small parts probably no problem. The seal and adhesives were the tricky parts for me. Other phones may not be as cunningly irritating as the iPhone. I have a 4 S. I have to charge it everyday, sometimes twice. ----------

My Epic 4g worked fine. The issue for me was coverage in my home area combined with no 4g (but having to pay for it monthly).
Sprint's customer service was awful and dishonest.
I am changing carriers as soon as I can afford it. I am paying good money for something that hardly works at home or at work. The battery is awful because my phone is searching for signal all day. I don't even have the background data on or anything syncing. I do that manually.
