Hello everyone.
First of all I want to say that you all have a great forum going on :)
Well, anyway, I have a question. I have bought a Hering Free Blues in D (I wanted to see what a cheap harp was like). Drawing and blowing regular notes goes fine, but once I try to drawbend notes on the 2 and 3 draw I need to use a whole lot of air to make a somewhat decent bend (pretty crappy still). Holes 1 and 4 do bend fine, btw. I believe that in a situation like this it means that the gap between the reeds and reedplate needs to be smaller. However, upon opening the harp I found that the gap was already insanely small (and the troubled holes 2 and 3 didnt fit with the 'big gap at 1st reed, smaller at 2nd.. etc' rule) so it looks as if those gaps would have to be increased. Adam did a video on this (I think 016?) in which he also tells us to increase the gaps to make reeds more playable. Okay. So I would be doing the right thing increasing these gaps, right? (I've made some little adjustments but havent felt that much improvement and before I go on I want to make sure that I'm going for the right thing.)
Also, I have no problem drawbending on other harps so I'm pretty sure it's the harp/reeds that are the problem here.
More, I also have a Marine Band in A which has a 3 draw that went unplayable after a week. I opened it up, removed some gunk that was on the reed, and discovered that the reed was super stiff. So I also opened that gap up a little and now it's in a somewhat playable state. However, this 3 draw still has a leaky sound and requires a ton of air. I'm able to bend it down all the three steps but the sound is pretty aweful. What should I do, try closing the gap a bit or flexing the reed some more and perhaps open it a bit further?
Some advice would be welcome, since the opening/closing of gaps appears to be contradicting itself in some situations. Ie: Too much air required: make the gap smaller. But for more playability: open up the gap.
Woah, I hope you can filter out my problem from this wall-of-text :)
Boogie on!
