Hi guys I'm buying some used Harmonicas soon and obviously want to sterilize them before sticking them in me Gob.
I have seen a product called Sterisol Spray advertised and thought this might be just the thing as I want to avoide stripping the harps down.
Has anyone used this spray? I am slightly worried about spraying it into my Harps and gumming up the reeds.
Cheers Geordie.

Hi Geordie.

Sterisol is a great product for cleaning your harps but I do not recommend this as a substitute to avoid stripping the Harps down.

You're still going to have to strip your harps down, give them a proper clean and once rinsed, spray everything with Sterisol, leave for a couple of minutes and then rinse off again to Sterilize.

Outside of that application, its great to use when you have finished playing, to give the covers a spray or two and wipe down. Wont gum up the reeds and so far...I havent gone into any toxic shock.

I use Sterisol, too. I do find you have to rinse it off very well or you will get more than you bargained for. I have several bottles but also have non-toxic wipes which to me seem to work even better. Email me and I will mail you a few.

I used to use all kinds of products to restore vintage harps. I used a salt and acid solution, CLR, Brasso, etc... I found that I get a better sound from them if I don't use anything harsh.

I would suggest you clean them be taking them apart and using a toothbrush and some toothpaste. Use quite a bit of toothpaste with just the right amount of water and you can get them as clean and you can without harming the brass. They won't shine like new, but them will be clean and still play well.

They don't have to be sterile, they just have to be clean. And anyway, if you don't get the crud off, no product will sterilize. And to get the crud off requires elbow grease more than any kind of product. Cutlery in a restaurant is not sterile, for example...

As for the combs, well, what kind of harps are they? What material comb?
