This is a spin off from Tooks's thread
Would you rather play a major tune in 3rd position or 12th?
I say 12th, for dixieland, and big band melodic tunes. I could see 3rd (mabey)for a bluesy major tunes (or is that an oximoron?), but that's out of my league at this time. ---------- theharmonicaclub.com (of Huntington, WV)

I like 12th, 1st, and 2nd for major stuff. I do over blow , but the chords, partial chords, double stops, and draw splits available in 3rd are more minor sounding. I'm not sure I know where any samples of pure major playing in 3rd position can be found.

3rd, if I have to pick between those two. I play mostly blues and blues-based music, so I like having easily accessible minor thirds and sevenths and diminished fifths, even in major keys.
For real major major stuff, I usually pick 1st or 2nd.
12th has some tricky bends in the first octave, plus you have to overblow 1 or 4 (which I can't yet) or blow bend the 8 hole if you want the minor seventh. I don't really use it yet, outside of practicing.

I agree with Timeistight.
I've never really found an advantage to 12th over, say, 2nd position. UNLESS, a particular melody lays out darn near perfectly in 12th or it's the path of least resistance.
