saw it at 10:00 pm, called at 7:10 am - offered to paypal him to hold it, - "no worry's just come by today, - I'll hold it for you". Pick up cash at ATM , call en route, - "really sorry - someone offerd me $1500 and I took it" "I would have held it but I really need the money" Can't blame him really. It's worth 3K. I told him 'no problem -understood' Shoulda hopped in the car at 7:15 - and I still mighta been late. - or should have offered him more $ myself, - though we never even got to discussin $$. Ah well, it's not like I don't have enough amps.

@ Joe_L - it wasn't you who nabbed it was it?

Not me. I'm not on the hunt for amplification at the moment. I'm out of storage space.

A couple years ago I had the opportunity to play an original Fender tweed Deluxe side-by-side with a Gibson GA-6 Lancer amp. They were both from 1958. The Gibson was fantastic.

I wrote about this in the Blues Harp Amps Blog.

A buddy of mine has a couple of original tweed Deluxes. A 5E3 and a previous model. Both amps were great sounding. I don't feel the need to own one. I would probably buy a repro or build one of Bruce Collins' kits.

I have a 1958 Gibson GA-20T
I just love that amp! It has a fuller sound to me than the deluxe.
There both great amps!

It wasn't that I though this would be 'the ultimate' harp amp though I expect it would be very good - It was that in my collecton compulsion, this would have been a major score -My first true vintage tweed - and 'money in the bank'. An amp of this vintage, in this condition, - for this price, - would have been close to a steal. There is no way I could buy one at true markdet value. I actually feel slightly relieved that I didn't 'take it from him' at that price though. In the end I believe he needed the money he got for it more than I needed the bargain.

@ Rick - I read your blog post a while ago (I really like your blog) - and then again after I thought I might be getting this. I actually have (on long-term loan) a GA-6 (not the lancer) and do really like it. Because of the days events I spent some time tweaking with tube swaps and playing through it today.

A harp playing buddy has the TV Front Deluxe, - the 5A3 - and I actually think that would be a better harp amp than the 5E3. It sounded killer. Funky character rich crunch at low volume. Some day one of those will fall into my lap.

@ Bonedog Yeah I agree the models before that one sound better (fuller) at lower volumes, but the 5E3 is something special once you get it just a little into the distortion range. I think they sound great with a good CR/CM shure. I've also heard some that are brittle and nasaly sounding.
The values wonder and most alot amps like that that don't sound good just need some parts replaced.
That would have been a good investment though I agree!!
@ rbeetsme you must have a sweet colection of amps!
Is your 54' two tone brown and is your 57' tweed with the speaker (baffle) board tilted back slightly?
What tubes do your amps have?
I think your 57' just like mine exept the tremelo circiut. I know they only made the tweed version for a short period. To bad because those are very cool looking and good sounding amps!
