Just came back from his show at the Limestone Blues Festival. He is at the top of his game. He sang some tremendous new material from his new album. He played harp and stretched out with the band without ever getting boring or repetitive. He danced around like a monkey possessed by funky music.
I was glad to see he has made an amazing recovery from his latest health problem.
He was playing with some amazing musicians, too. Apparently his drummer was not allowed to cross the border into Canada so he called up his drummer from two years back - Curtis said they played a show yesterday for the first time and it's like he picked up where he left off two years ago. ...But they mostly were playing original songs form his newly-released album....
At one point, he told the band he was changing things up and called for Chicago blues. After about six instrumental choruses (mostly harp) he broke into "That ain't it" which happens to be one of my all-time favourite songs. He was signing autographs and CDs after the show and I asked him if he played that song often and he said no, "just something to play."
As always, I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why he isn't a household name - he is that good. A lot better than some of the artists in mainstream media.
