If anyone has a naff hohner blues harp on a wood comb this may be a cheap fix.
I found that, with the aid of a drill and maybe a file, you can fit Suzuki Bluesmaster plates to the Hohner comb.
The Suzuki plates retail at about £12 in the U.K.
You will have to drill the reed plate to align the fixing screws and open up the holes in the reed plate for the cover fixing. I also drill through tines 3 & 7 to fix the reed plate at the front (optional).
You may also have to bend in, very slightly, the back cover plate support tags as the suzuki reed plates are fractionaly less deep than the Hohner ones.
Please note that I have only done this on an MS WOOD comb, I have not tried on the plastic combs of the MS series.
The end result of this is that you end up with a pretty good harp. The MS wood comb is already sealed and you don't have the dampness induced problems that can be experienced with the pear wood combs of the handmade series.
Also,to me the harp plays louder than the plastic combed Bluesmaster.
The comb I used I had already reshaped (rounded the ends) so if there is any overhang of the reedplates on ends you will have to file this off. It's worth the effort.

Lee Oskar reedplates are the same size as the hohner blues harp comb! Same thing a little drilling here and there, but the big thing is to put a blues harp cover with the back opened up or even better yet big river covers. Then tune it to your liking. Totally different harp! Doen't sound like a hohner, but does sound better than any Lee Oskar! In my opion.
Oh if anyone out there is thinking of doing this. The comb is only half sealed! Butchblock it up!!
