I spent an hour this afternoon talking with a Chinese grad student in the Southern Studies M.A. program here at Ole Miss. He flew in from Shanghai five days ago. He calls himself Bob. Very nice, very energetic guy. He speaks fast, fluent English with a slight southern accent that he got from the many movies (Deliverance, Fried Green Tomatoes, Crossroads) that he devoured back in China.

He mentioned that I was pretty well-known in China, which floored me. He then showed me the two YouTube-equivalent websites in China: Youku and Tudou. These were completely new to me.

http://www.tudou.com/

http://www.youku.com/

I searched my name and was floored to see a bunch of my YouTube videos pop up. They're my YouTube videos--but they've apparently been downloaded from YT and re-uploaded to these sites. Some of them have been monetized; they're advertising Chinese products to Chinese people.

They don't have nearly as many hits as the same videos have accumulated here. But hey: the China market is a mother-uck-r. If .001% of the folks over there know my name, I can retire to Monaco, once I've sold .001% of them my latest album.)

First thing I did is price out a r/t ticket to Shanghai. About $1400. 24 hour total travel time. I gotta get to Shanghai. First I need a big gig, though.

I'd encourage folks here to visit those two sites and put the names of familiar and not-so-familiar blues musicians into the search engine. It works with regular old American words, even though 95% of the text that it brings up is Chinese pictograms.

They're very good at; I'll call it stealing. You may call it gangstering. Whatever you call it, it has happened to you too. They're makin money off your shit and that ain't all. There's a whole lot about Shanghai for many to learn and I am among the ignorant. They don't give a shit about patents, rights or anything else. And AG I don't mean to derail this I'm just sharing my thoughts after reading your post. Does anyone see where the money is going? Check one, two.

I just read what you wrote(lip ripper) and was wondering about that myself, yea i saw my utubes on there about 2 or 3 years ago,I dont really care either way,but it would be nice if It could develop into something, but Like you said ,Ive thought about that to (Not getting paid)

But then again Ive been emailed about having adds or something on mine(the ones on utube) and paid for people stopping in,I havent really done anything about it,
I have a few videos but ,after there posted on this forum for a day or 2 ,I dont get many people stopping in,so I havent done anything with it

You guys are my biggest fan base ,I dont know if thats good or bad;-)

I know an Aussie country singer who did a series of shows in English in China. Whilst his following was minuscule and unmeasurable in terms of their population he claims to be getting a very good income from CD sales.

Now if blues could be played on a Tremolo that would be helpful in China!!! Tremolo is big time over there. In fact world wide Tremolos are the biggest selling harps which is largely due to their popularity in China.

Anyone interested in expanding their business can only ignore China to their peril. I visited China as a tourist a few years back and found it a great place. I loved Beijing & Shanghai both of which are vastly different cities. There is lots to see and do, it is inexpensive, the food & beer is tops & the people I found were very friendly & welcoming.

Adam you must go. Speak with Tony Eyers at Harmonica Academy as he would have good contacts. In Shanghai there are huge numbers of expats ie US, English, Aussies etc that live there. With your skills you will have no trouble in recouping costs of your visit plus you will have a really great time.
