ive just assembled a speaker cab with a brand new pair of Weber 8A100 speakers...i've wired them for 4 ohms so i can use them with the "champ"(VCXD) and the VJ

i'm wondering if i should be giving them some special consideration through a 'break-in' process. ive never had "new" speakers before. at the moment i have ray charles giving them a little workout for me via the ipod

The sound before and after the so called break in is very small. The treble be clear after a period of time. It's best to play them and get used to them.

Gig it every weekend for about a year. That'll break it in...

Play them. I have a 8A125-O in my tweed Champ clone. It keeps getting better and better.

You might want to touch base with Brian Purdy at HarpGeaer. He told me that he broke in the speaker in the HG2 he sold to me by hooking it up to a DVD player and playing it full volume for a number of hours. I love the sound. So maybe there's something to that.

http://www.watfordvalves.com:

"Brand new speakers usually require a “breaking in period”. Start with a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum. Then, turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain and play with a fat, clean tone.

Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half. On your guitar, use the middle pickup position (if your guitar has more than one pickup) and play for 10-15 minutes using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing. This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely."

I tired the 'weber method' on my BMRI jensen speakers. Ran low voltage 60 hz AC from my variac through them for more than a day. I treated the ribbed edge with acetone beforehand.

It loosened up the bass a bit and perhaps made them a tad less nasaly - but I'm not really certain because I couldn't side by side compare them. I still don't really like the stock Jensens and have put two other speakers in the bottom slots.

Google 'acetone speaker treatment' and variac speaker break in.

With both amps and hi-fi, the break-in process does indeed make a different. I think 4 to 6 hours of Ray Charles at a healthy volume should do the trick!
