I had put my harps away in storage for a number of years. Recently, I put it all back in action and have been practicing pretty hard to get my chops back.
I'm ready to hit the scene and have been invited to a couple of jams and several gigs as a guest player.
I need a little help, because I'm out of touch as to which Blues Harp tunes are popular and commonly requested.
Any suggestions on which tunes I should be practicing?

As a harp player who loves hearing older blues tunes, I always want to hear covers of tunes from Little and Big Walter, James Cotton, both Sonny Boys, Howling Wolf, etc., as well material from Robert Johnson, Sleepy John Estes, etc. I know a lot of harp (and blues) players stay away from much of this material as it has been played so many times, but if you don't go overboard it's hard to beat. And there are plenty of songs by any of those guys that don't get played much. For example, you could do Mean Old World or Mellow Down Easy from Little Walter, or Tighten Up On It (Big Walter playing behind Johnny Youngs), etc. I would pay to listen to tunes like those played all night long.

1.Walkin Through the Park 2.Smokestack Lightnin 3.I'm Ready 4.Waiting for the Bus (ZZ Top--lead guitar riff can also be a great harp riff) 5. Help Me (a must play for a good harp player) 6. Born in Chicago 7.Stormy Monday (of course) 8.Crossroads 9. One Way OUt (Allman Brothers) 10.Unchain My Heart (a Ray Charles classic, performed by the late San Diego blues harmonica genius Ken Schopmeyer and his band King Biscuit Blues). 11.Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights) 12.The Work Song 14. Hustled Down in Texas 15.I Love Everybody (great swing tune by Johnny Winter on his SECOND WINTER album).
These are some songs I have played with bands over the years semi regularly. ---------- Ted Burke http://youtube.com/watch?v=-VPUDjK-ibQ&feature=relmfu ted-burke.com
