I purchased a marine band and a special 20, both in the key of C. I seemed to like the special 20s better so I have doing all my practicing with it. When I started working on my 3 hole draw bends, I have been having trouble getting the first half step or the blue third as Adam calls it. So out of frustration I grabbed the marine band and tried with it and I hit it the first try. it is not perfect and not controlled yet but I can consistently hit it along with the other two notes as well. Can anyone shed some light on this. Should I just keep trying the special 20 or am I marine band bound

thanks
Dean

Both are Hohner, but the Sp 20 got in principle the best tune-up: unlike what happened to you, my Sp 20 works better OOTB than my 3 Marine Band!
I'll have to simply retune-up the MB, and so you'll have to manage the same way your Sp20: don't put it in a drawer, but open it! (the harp, not the drawer).

Hi Dean.

I submit that you could buy five SP20s or five MBs in the same key and experience the same thing between different harmonicas of the same make/model. The reality is that out-of-the-box harps are not set up perfectly. They are mostly in the ballpark but each one is different. Your SP20 may not be perfectly airtight around the three hole. The MB may be better gapped. The SP20's three blow reed may be misshapen. Who knows?

The problem with beginning harp is that it's a catch-22 situation where you need to know what a properly harp is like in order to learn to play properly, but in order to know how to properly set up your harps, you need to know how to play...

I hope this helps. Don't assume all Marine Bands (or SP20s) play the same way. Don't assume that for any out-of-the-box harmonica.

Aside from the two harps in C playing a little differently, when you go to, say, an A harp, you will find that you need to make little changes in your embouchre (sp) to make the same bends. Generally speaking, the lower the key, the more difficult it is to achieve correct intonation on the bends...for me anyway.
Once you achieve a certain level of skill, you will be able to make adjustments on the fly without much trouble.
