i use a 1976 30/65 music man amp,it has a master volume on it and it works good for me.i set it {MV} AT 7 and regular volume anyware from 5 to 9,turn treble to 2,med. 2 and bass to 7.also i always set amp to 30 watts.it`s 2x10 amp.this gives me a great tone for harp.rare feedback too.i`m curious about "Master Volume" does this lower the gain when turned down ? i`ve never read anything here about Master Volume .anyone have knowledge on it...

There are lots of MV circuits, each with their own quirks (some never allow a non-master tone, some do, some sound normal at 3/4 rotation, some are "balls-to-the-wall" at 1/4 turn). I have found that in some amps they can be very useful.

It's swings & roundabouts, you nearly always reduce the the quotient of available clean signal that hits the power tubes, whilst increasing the single-ended character developed in the preamp (too much of this can be overly fuzzy raspy, but may not be an issue in a clean amp, or an amp with a lower mu preamp tube - I'm assuming your MM is solid state in the preamp). If it makes your life easier & you like the sound...carry on & enjoy.

Hi Colman, I have 2 amps with separate controls labelled gain and volume. I always have considered these to be "master volume" rigs. I started off following Jon gindick's advice re settings. That was ok, but lately I've been reducing gain, turning "volume" up. One approach I've seen suggested is to crank the volume to max and bring in the gain until you like the sound. I've tried that, it's workable I guess. I like Gary Smith's advice on amp settings. He says he closes his eyes and twiddled the knobs until he likes what he hears! I don't know if he literally does that, but I think I understand his point.
