I just got a call from the band leader and he was telling me about the stage setup at tomorows gig,(Hawg waller biker event fundraiser for Autism)Its probelly the biggest setup Ive had a chance to be part of ,they have a huge PA,and they have a professional soundman running the sound, and a sound tent to keep the equipment protected.Im wondering what to bring,Im thinking my pedal and mic would work, but I have heard that sometimes the rp 155 pedal can feed back even with the patches(hunter harp patches) if the PA is a big system with floor monitors,(I guess it feedbacks from the floor monitors at lest thats what I read on one of the forums)I was going to use my PA (60watt)and still might but I wonder if it will be loud enough up against the house PA,I might could mike my PA,I havent decided what to do,But firgure Ill bring all my gear,I hope to get some pics and video of the event. any tips greatly apreaciated, thanks

Can't you hook up your RP155 anyway as you have the option to turn it off if you get feedback?
Sounds like a lot of trouble for you to set up your PA on the off chance you'd need it. Just run your mic and pedal straight into their PA and you'll probably get the sound you want anyway.

I think you might be right,A selling point with the Rp155 and patches was that it could be used that way I heard,Ill probelly go that way.And try it and see how it works,My only concern there is that my guitar cord is only 12 feet long that would run from the pedal to the PA,And Im not sure if that is long enough,my mic cable is long but i need to be able to change settings.
If I can find a longer cable at the gig though I might just go the pedal route,Ive heard only give the sound man about 75% of what your volume is so ,you can turn it up if necasary, any other tips for working with a sound man?

Here's a tip. Set your rig up the way you always do. If this is your first gig it's all to important for you to be set up right. You're gonna fight the nerves about playing, don't stress on the setup.
A 60 watt PA will push its way through the Mix at most small venues and outdoor gigs. That's lots of power but in this case you'll likely have to feed into the main PA. To avoid feedback don't mic your PA speakers just patch your head through the mains on the master PA sorta' like Little Walter style.
Most of all have faith in yourself and let the sound man do his thing. They don't want feedback either.

i use a digitech with patches.
i plug it into the pa.
it will feedback.
you are correct- the monitors are the issue.
you avoid this by not standing directly in front of the monitors.
you can have them lower your mix out of your monitor. that should help.

using your own pa only eliminates the use of their monitors.

if they have a professional sound guy and pa, i would think they will be supplying the cables, too. that has always been the case in my experience. anyhow- you gotta get some longer cables!
if you arent changing settings during a song, you shouldnt have any issues with a shorter cable.

your next piece of gear needs to be a wireless system from greg at blowsmeaway. i love roaming the stage!

and since i just said that, i realize i never got any feedback problems when i walked the stage. maybe the sound guy lowered me out of the mix on all the monitors?

thanks guys for the advice

Well got there about a hour early,I was told that we couldnt bring in drink and that even the band had to buy draws,So I got a 6 pack of tall boys and sat outside about 50 feet from the main stage

,I busted out my acoustic guitar and harp rack and started jamming,Heck I had a cigar box full with some CD's I thought I might try some busking,Maybe after the show,But It didnt happen,Anyways The band was not there yet and I knew the girl putting on the event,
she saw me playing and said If Rainwater aint here soon Your going on,I was feeling relaxed jamming on the back of my pickup truck gate,I thought sure why not,Well a few minutes befor the dead line the rest the band showed up,I was like cool We set up and started a mic check.Turned out there was a direct box on the stage with a guitar cord in it I just pluged my pedal in,Good thing cause I didnt bring my amp,I had a feeling the pedal was enough and It worked great,We was fixing to start playing after a sound check, when I was like I hear a drum machine,The Bandleader on bass Turned to me and said is that your pedal,I was I dont think so ,Turned out it was;-)

The band started jamming I think it was a Black Sabbath song,We havent practiced much I jammed with the drummer and the vocal/rythem guitarist,Who was playing bass cause we havent got a bass player yet,A few times but,we havent practiced alot
and its been 6 months sence our last gig,

Well I was like man Im thinking blues harp stuff, aint gona work today,Im just going to have to feel it and just go,I have the Bandleader really wanting me to play some harp he.s all about lots of harp,So I just went back to just playing, Noodlin it hard and agressive but at time soft and in between places like a call and responce,

I usually get in a groove with the drummer and comp a groove,,It felt weird Ive been working the last year on,getting out of the habit of playing alot, been working on chorus forms adding a new lick now and then,But I was like he wants alot of harp and its songs we havent practiced, just get a groove and do some weird background stuff on some songs.

Thats how it was ,I tried laying back but the band leader would give me the look like play.A few songs sounded Great,The pedal had me and the rest of the band wondering what the Hell(IN a good way),I had picked a half dozen sounds to use.

But they sounded alot different than what we were exspecting,We did a Santana song that was pretty good or so it felt,I had a fast tremlo effect picked to do some back ground harmonies,And It started making this cool and different sound,I dont know if the sound man did something or what or my new pedal surprised me in a big PA,,But the band leader looked at me and basically said is that you,I shurged my shoulder ,thinking I think so but im not sure,;-)

He said keep it up,that song i really enjoyed Me and the lead guitar player really exchanged spots in the song .We had the groove ,BUT there was a couple that I felt like the drummer was the only one holding it together;-),I was wondering,If i was pulling the original groove to much or what,we all worked it out,I kind of pulled back and the guitars got back on track we didnt crash or anything, but it wasnt what is was on the songs we hit good,

I felt like I was over playing for a harp player,Im trying to get away from that,But the bandleader likes it,and my friends who were there seemed to like it,But I havent heard a recording yet,I have a friend who did a video, but I dont know what it looks or sounds like,But in the next week i plan on putting something to gether,It was a Charity event Ive been wanting to play last couple years ,Saw the old band I was in,

had some laughes with some friends,The bands ended up getting free Beer and smoked food,But it was over a 100 degress all day,I ended Up feeling sick,I had to stop drinking and got some food,But left a few hours after we Played,All in all it was fun Event,But Hot way to Hot.

all the stage stuff aside, you have to watch the hot days on stage. or street for that matter. when i was younger i could withstand 100 plus for hours, but that was 20 years ago. and even then, with cooler collars and shade, it still took a big toll on me. i would not feel all the way right again for a day or 2 after a big outdoor texas summer gig.

Yea are right on that Jbone;

It about killed me,Well maybe not killed,But I forgot to bring a water bottle,I usually have one ,But I was nervous about what to bring and what not,I forgot my water bottle

.well I had me a couple tall boys befor going on,And thats not bad I drink all the time,But allways try and stay just buzzed Im not a person that really enjoys getting slammed

,But a good buzz is nice,They rest of the guys are the same,a couple aint bad while playing as long as you can maintain,At least with what were doing,But I got on stage and relised I didnt have a water bottle,So I went to the truck pulled a couple tall boys out,Now i relised it would of been ok to took my small cooler by the stage but,

I wasnt sure at the time and just set the beers out next to my equipment chest,The beer garden hadnt opened and there was not time to set out for water so,I used the beer for wetting my whistle,And man they got hot,

I think that did me in about as much as the heat,When we got done, the beer I had left was hot.I had been using it just keep moisture in my mouth ,But I was fine during the show but about a hour later I was, feeling sick,A friend kept on trying to buy me beers ,

I was like thanks but ,I have a band bracelet,I can get draws free,But I cant even drink anything with out getting sick.I finally left about 4 hours later,I had been up all night with excitment and man was that bed a blessing,I woke up feeling great ,,

but what got me was the front man to the headlining band, talked about sleeping in his car the night befor cause of doing some gig,and he was in his fifties,And the last band I was in,a short time was there and they just done a gig in another state till 5 am sleeped some in the motel drove to oklahoma did a acoustic set at the Hawg waller,Then was going to Tulsa that night to do a regular show, and had another one for Sunday,They have a manager and stay busy, but even though there half my age Im like man how they do it,;-)
