playing MB`s for 44 yrs. i realized long ago ,i better learn how to play dry mouthed.i`m sure all y`all who have played MB`s have had the wood comb swell, ouch !so after having this happen for a few yrs. i decided to learn to play dry mouthed, and have been doing so since.i think that dry playing has better tone, wet distorts the reed vibration. i haven`t had a wood comb swell on me in ages.......

That's all well and good until you play a place that serves food or drinks. When those ribs or a margarita go by, I sometimes find myself with more spit than I would like to deal with. I just tap tings out while I'm singing or lay out a fill if I'm playing on rack.

I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I was playing at a Starbucks in downtown Indy this year during the Superbowl weekend, and some dude walked by with a coffee. For whatever reason, I started gushing like a bull mastiff and it was right in the middle of a solo. I had to add a little improv pause to clear things up.

I do seal my MB combs, so I can play wet or dry. For gunk buildup alone, everyone should learn to play dry. (and don't watch the margaritas)

I like a bit of gunk to seal the gaps. ;) marine bands aren't quite as susceptible to swelling as they used to be, but I only have a couple of the new ones so far. Hopefully it will be a few years yet before I fill out the set.

i remember seeing neil young
he had a bucket filled with water
he kept his harps in.
i supposse he could afford to buy new ones
for each show.

back in the days before anyone sealed combs, we almost all soaked our Marine Band harps before playing. Customizing meant cutting off the protruding times with a razor blade.

dried saliva can sure change a reed's pitch. i learned some time ago to always make sure my harps are fairly clean before tossing them or trying to file the pitch higher!
