Jon, keyboard player of Deep Purple, died of pancreatic cancer aged 71 yesterday.

He wrote the rock classic 'smoke on the water'

For anyone who hasent heard of them, try Live in Japan album, perhaps one of the best live rock recordings ever.

For us old guys who remember their live shows, they have left a fine legacy. RIP

Sad news indeed. The first album I ever bought was "Deep Purple in Rock", and, like thousands of others, the first thing I ever learned on guitar was the riff from Smoke on the Water - the scourge of guitar shop assistants everywhere.

Jon Lord was a true innovator and amazing organ player. the organ solo at 2:10 has to be one of my favourites.

@greeno "Smoke on the Water - the scourge of guitar shop assistants everywhere"

If you want to be left alone just look at the salesman and ask "Ya' wanna' here me play Smoke on the Water or Stairway to Heaven?"

Purple were so important to me growing up. I love the way
he'd move effortlessly between classical, jazz, blues, even novelty songs all in a few bars.

Deep Purple were my favourite band by a mile when I was a teenager in the 70,s.Biggest regret was never seeing them live at that time.Although the band members changed a few times ,the best line up they ever had in my opinion were Ian Gillan,Jon Lord,Ritchie Blackmore,Roger Glover and Ian Paice...unbeleivable!! Did get to see the band a couple of years ago minus Jon Lord and Blackmore.Sad to think that the great line up
of the 70,s will never be repeated.
R.I.P Jon Lord.
@ Florida -Trader....I,ve done the same as you countless times...what a track! Plus a little harp near the end as well.

Their first album had a rock radio single called, I believe "Hush Hush" (not the Siegel/Schwall one). It was badass and the organ just dripped with power, not ripping it up, but somehow contained with that potential like it could burst out at any moment.

I enjoyed the band up until "Smoke on the Water" which, but the way, was written about a concert that Frank Zappa played on a small island w/stage in the middle of a small lake in Spain where the stage actually caught fire during the show.

@The Iceman

You are absolutely right about the fire but it was lake Lucerne, not in Spain but Switzerland, I am reliably informed but you could be right.

I was born in Weston-super-mare, a smallish seaside town in SW England. Richie Blackmore was also from Weston, so, thay finished their tours at the Winter Gardens every time. Happy days..
