Joe Filisko gave me some really cool recordings when I stayed at his house. One was a set of three or four songs by Luther "Snake Boy" "Georgia Boy" Johnson. This is a different guy from Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson. I've seen the latter; I never saw the former, but these recordings were deep, dangerous blues. He sounded like a guy who carried a knife and fingered it when he got to a certain level of drunkness.
The recordings were made in the early 70s and the harp player was very good. His name was Tony Cognito or Cagnita or something like that.
Joe has asked me to put the question to this forum: who IS this Tony guy? I figure that BBQ Bob will know the answer. It was fine stuff, in any case. A strong rhythmic groove with a funk derivation--but also contemporary Chicago blues from that era. Amazing stuff.
Actually, before posting this, I've just done a little research and in less than two minutes I'd gotten the answer here:

Around 1970 he moved to Boston and formed a band. Tony Cagneeno was the harp player. Remeber the name.

Luther "Snake Boy" Johnson was great. Good singer and guitarist. There are a few albums out with him on them. Like Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, he also spent some time with Muddy Waters.
His three easiest recordings to find are:

I've known Tony for many years. He had the Junior Wells sound nailed better than anyone I've ever met. He quit blues for several years to be a punk rock guitarist and then returned to blues again and he sat in with me several times. Snake, or Georgia Boy, as Luther was called, had moved to Boston after he left Muddy in the early 70's. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
