Here is a very interesting Canadian Broadcasting Corp. radio documentary series on the history of the recording industry, called "Twilight of the Gods". There is free streaming of this series.
The second of this 5-part series was broadcast this past weekend. It was about the birth of the blues/jazz and country music genres. Very, very interesting stuff. Did you know that the first blues recording by Mamie Smith in 1920 and the subsequent huge "race record" market that was discovered as a result was an accident (she filled in for a white singer who was originally chosen to sing on that session)? The creation of the country music genre was similarly accidental? And the separation of "black" and "white" musics was just a marketing strategy? Fascinating stuff. ----------
